Thanks for the picture, always the best.
CHMSL - center high mounted stop light.
I just had a look at a 997.2 and tried my iPhone 3G - confirming it will not charge but bluetooth (loaded my 1500+ address book) and iPod functions well in my quick walk through.

The non-charging issue relates to Apples stupid decision to change suddenly in the charging mechanism on their connectors: dropping the firewire charging pins and switching to the USB2 charging pins. Why both could not co-exists I don't know, but its the result of the transition. If they don't change the interface again, then the next generation will probably address this, or an aftermarket solution will come out that fixes the charging problem.
I understand the issue.
Apple used FireWire (IEEE 1394) on their early iPods for charging and data transfer. As of the first generation iPod Nano and the fifth generation iPod Classic at the end of 2005, Apple discontinued using FireWire for data transfer and made a full transition to USB 2.0 in an attempt to reduce cost and form factor. With these changes, FireWire could only be used for recharging. Then with the iPhone 3G they stopped supporting charging on the FireWire pins. It's too bad that Porsche and their vendor, HARMAN/BECKER weren't on board with the change. As discussed earlier in this thread, there's hope for various solutions.

I see it more as, its too bad Apple hosed their customers by dropping FireWire pin charging on the iPhone 3G. If you have an iPhone 3G, you need to modify the car interface to supply charging power on the USB pins. Everyone else can continue to use the adapter in the cars to charge thier iPods.
Came across this converter to resolve the charging issue with the dock connector and an iPhone 3G on the new iPod interface...
"Get your iPhone 3G and latest generation iPods charging with all iPod and iPhone devices. This adapter fixes the charging issue by converting Firewire power to USB, and passes through all other connections.
The adapter is 1.4 inches long with a male connector on one end and a female on the other. Plug the male end of the adapter into the bottom of your iPod or iPhone, and then attach the female end it to your interface cable or accessory.
The adapter doesn't prevent the "accessory not made to work" if this is popping up on your iPhone or iPod when connected directly. Since the charge converter passes through all pins, a device that isn't made to work with the iPhone or iPod will still trigger that message.
Order now, the charge converters start shipping on October 1st."
Sounds like it could work?http://www.cablejive.com/iphone_3g_c...converter.html
Has anyone seen anything else?

Yeah, I saw that .. unfortunate. That position must really give one much better XM reception than on the engine cover out back. I'm already thinking 'how do I relocate that thing'. But I want to give it a shot. Usually, car styling changes that are radical always rub me the wrong way, but frequently I get to accept them over time. I'd hate to think they put it there for a 5% gain in reception, though.
