I know this may not be the rigtht place but I wonder if anyone can help me with my navigation unit, Porsche PCM 2,1.

I have bought an imported (To europe) Porsche 997 from USA and I can't get the navigation to work with an European map DVD. Downloaded two multimedia update cd:s but with no sucess.
Is the unit hardware coded? Can I fix it myself?

Have you contacted a dealer in Europe, I would imagine they might know.

 

No, but that seems the only thing to do. Thought is was just to change to European DVD but I was wrong.

 

DVD players are "zone" coded whether for video or for navigation.

Your dealer will have to change the zone in the software to the correct the dvd zone for Sweden.

It's a simple process.

 

Hi, sorry this is not related to yr question. Do you happen to know what was requested to register the US norm car in the EC? Exhaust? Lights? Tks.

 

Data dvd's being region coded? Thats news to me.. I did not think region codes had any use outside of video format discs... well, anything is possible, I guess.

 

Every DVD player is zone encoded. It makes no difference as to wheter it's data or video for reproduction. The maker does not know its application at manufacture.

And tell us now what brand that would be.

 

I simply installed the USA DVD while in America. I used the European DVD (Central Europe) one when over there. I don't believe that anything else needs to be done once the system locks up on active GPS and initializes.

So there may be what is known as a "flag" on the DVD that on the fly encodes the zone.

 

While the dvd players may have region coding, which is used for video playback, I have never seen a single dvd data disk that was region coded such that it made any difference what region the dvd player was... after all , this is a data drive in the cars as well. So I'm still not convinced that the region code setting on the dvd player in the cars has any impact on the playback of the disks containing data - such as the navigation system.

What you say is interesting and very possible, but since the nav DVD could play a video DVD I am sure there is some encoding but maybe not.

I just find it surprising in light of what the video industry is doing to prevent unauthorized video duplication.

Who knows.

In the past I have received many calls from Europeans who can't play their DVD's here in the US asking if I could change the zone on the US player to play theirs. No way I can w/o manufacturer's software which they hold close to the vest!

 

You might have to buy a new EU DVD from Porsche Sweden. My friend had the same problem here in Finland and the "downloaded" version did not work like the OEM's.

 

These are facts:

1. Porsche (NAVTEQ) Navigation DVD's are Data DVD's ; No region codes exist in DATA DVD's.

2. I have reports that a legit european map DVD for Porsche PCM2.1 works well even in a US spec vehicle.

I would recommend to go to a dealership, "Borrow" a DVD, throw it in, and if it works, Buy it. If not, You may have a bad DVD NAV Computer.
