You better be sure before you buy, you might end up with something like this.

Just for the record, Big_O obviously knew what the car looked like before he bought it, he just wasn't sure of the model designation after he heard that some 996 models were produced in 2005. Some folks seem to be suggesting that he purchased a car sight unseen. I prefer his question about model numbering to some of the others posted here, like "I'm ordering a new Porsche for $110k and I need your help to decide what color to get".

Big_O: Enjoy that new (997) P-car. Oh, and FWIW even though you didn't ask, I think basalt black looks great!

Thanks guys, for the record I'm not an idiot! I was adjusting valves in Mercury Capri's at 16 years old. Been into mechanics for many years. There might be some people with a heavy checkbook who will buy anything site unseen -- yeah right LOL.

I had thought (before my purchase) the vehicle in question was a 997. Hence, this post was made in the 997 forum!!! After hearing some contradicting information where Porsche made 996's and 997's in 2005, began to question the model and just wanted to confirm mine was a 997. Some people may have misunderstood my post or maybe I wasn't clear enough with my question. Nontheless, thanks to those guys who were mature and respectful. Sometimes we say things and mean something different. Patience is a virtue.

To strong887, paid $54k with 22k miles. Market price, 2 owners and complete documented service history from 0 miles to 22k miles. Oil changes every 3k miles. No engine issues and still have some warranty left on the vehicle. Of course Basalt Black, cause black is the only color I drive.

Peace.

Actually they are being quite kind- the difference between the 996 and 997 are HUGE! Many more mechanical issues with a 996, doesn't drive as well or as fast and is not near as a attractive, the interior is far superior in a 997- besides THAT they are the same car!!

I think also the forum members on this board are some of the most knowledgable on the Internet about P-Cars so asking a question like that you are lucky you did not get "flamed" much more severely- what they are saying is that selecting a 993, 996 or 997 or now a 997.2 (amognst others) is the first bit of DD.

I also find that these forum members are amongst the nicest and most patient of any forum I have visited- they are very accepting of many newbie questions and take the time to give thoughtful answers-

Enjoy your "997" - you lucked out with that one!!!

True, everyone must start somewhere. However, if you get some images of the front end of a 997 and a 996 it is blatantly obvious what the differences are. Easy to find out.

From Wikipedia, for example:
