Someone told me that the cayman's engine doesn't have the longevity of the 997 engine. As an owner of a 997s, I'm happy if this is true, but curious if this is true. My 997 has been in the shop a number of times, rms, pam failure, so I don't know if my engine is as bulletproof as they say. I'm now out of warranty and was thinking about a cayman.....just like the 997 so much more.

 

The current Cayman/Boxster engine is the same engine design as the 997.1 engine. Some of these engines may develop RMS but they should be easily repaired or replaced by PAG.

The face-lifted Cayman (to arrive in early 09) will have the new engine design now available in the 997.2.

 

My CS has been just as reliable as any other Pcar we have had...and I have far more miles on it than all of our other cars except the 955.

 

So my friend doesn't know what he's talking about....he mentioned that the cayman has a different engine platform and won't go more than 90k miles. He drives a 993.

Exactly. The M97 has been proven time and time again both on and off the track. The A91 is not proven at all and I will be a little pissed if porsche continues racing the M97 but sells the A91 - a bit deceiving.

 

PAG does not race the M97 engine. It races the GT1-derived engine available on Turbo/GT3/GT2.

 

Is your friend alluding to using significantly on the track? There have been some discussions / opinions that question some water cooled engines - regarding long term longevity when used on the track very often.

Bottom line to me, I would not worry about it.
