what is the deal with Sport Chrono?

Does anyone know if a Carrera S not equipped with Sport Chrono drive differently than 1 with? I can't find any info. Porsche claims that throttle response is better in Sport mode with Sport Chrono.

Or, does normal mode just tame the car. My question is and I don't really know how to phrase it is Is car not eqipped with the chrono package act as a car equipped and in Sport Mode.?

SOrry for the half - witted explanation.

quote from 997 brochure:

"in sport mode, the engine management system's variable parameters are recalibrated to enhance engine response. A modified throttle map empowers your right foot with more progressive reaction to each tap of the accelerator. In higher gears, a rev-limiter works in tandem to offer additional protection for the engine under acceleration."

It also goes on to say some stuff about changes in t"tip-tronic" performance when in SPORT mode. But who nobody cares about that except for Sharkster!!!!!

With the Sport Chrono option, when you press the sport button:
--the throttle response is increased
--PASM (if the car has it) goes into sport mode
--the intervention threshold for PSM in increased

The stop watch allows you to time and store lap times. You can also set and save various convenience features (daytime running lights on/off, auto door locking, comfort lighting duration, climate control settings, door unlocking settings, etc.).

So, If I don't order sport chrono,

will my my car not have the throttle response as a car with sport chrono in the "sport" mode?

I had the sport button on my M3, and felt it was stupid. The car should be instant on all the time. Especially if you are just cruising and someone wants to play, and you get on it, and are like, "wait I have to push the Sport button."

Correct--the modified throttle map is only available with the Sport Chrono package, when you press the sport button.

that is a dumb option.
I had the sport button in m3 and i think it was retarded.
one more thing to go wrong. Keep the car simple, keep it real from get go.

I agree. The throttle response should on all of the time.
As for the features, you should not use a clock for setting your convenience features. Use the radio. Does this mean you cannot set these features without the "sport" chrono?

I drove mine home last night with the sport on and off. I could not tell the difference between the two. I will dyno test the sport mode today and see what the difference is.

I added the sport chrono just in case there is a difference. When I test drove the car, I forgot about the sport button. If it is a gimmick, there goes a grand.

Gimmick or not, the PASM ride with "Sport" off is uncomfortably vague. With Sport turn on, the car feels like I would want a normal Carrera on the street. It's quite a noticeable difference and one thing to notice is with Sport "off" the car doesn't behave well, it's like it's under-dampened and the springs are moving the car around. With Sport "on" the dampening is almost over-done in a Goldilocks (sp?) sort of "too soft, too hard" sort of way ... I'm guessing a deft hand with a PST3 and access to say Ohlins or JRZ and the after-market will have a good selection of decent coil-overs to take away anything unlikeable about PASM or Sport Chrono, but I'm confident you want the different throttle map -- it's fun to have it blip-able and it seems to let the power off with sort of a 'throtte snap' during up-shifts, so I find it easier and smoother with Sport on.

The only thing I really don't like about the Sport Chrono is the damn two-dollar watch in the middle of the dash! I ordered it based on spy-pics or something showing the thing could rotate down and out of site when not in use ... this "bobble-head" clock is not attractive!

Cheers,

Thanks

I've read some professoinal reviews that the car performed best with Sport on and suspension set to normal for back road driving.

I have to say that I thought I noticed an appreciable difference in the car's pedal response and handling when set to chrono/sport mode. Perhaps it was a placebo!
