I owned a 2008 M3 DCT and I must say it was a marvel. But as others have said, after a while I found I just drove around in auto mode mostly and I lost some of the driver involvement I loved in my older M's. That being said, the quick shifting trans makes leaving lesser cars in the dust that much easier.

But, I sold it the new M and bought a 997S 6spd if that tells you anything....

I have railed against PDK on two fronts before having driven two cars with PDK, one with and one without S/C: It's less involving than stick shift. My question was "which makes me happier?" The answer was stick shift. Just because PDK is faster doesn't mean you will enjoy it more. I dislike the "Bat Ear" shifters. Yes you can learn how to use them, but the basic system of shifting on BMW's, Ferrari's, Maserati's, etc. is a much more intuitive system to use. It's a personal choice and mine is to stick with stick.

I spent some time with the PDK and it is definitly one of the better semi-manuals I have driven. I really feel that this tranny one-upped SMG and would be a joy at the track and daily commutes. No matter how good it is I would have a hard time straying from a standard gear box, I would miss the third pedal!

Jay Leno has a great video where he drives both and ends up saying he loves the idea but he would go with the manual as well.
Jay Leno has yet to learn that Porsche is a 2 syllable word!!

disagree with that ratio

sequential > dual clutch > manual > automatic

sequential for better weight savings over the dual clutch, dual clutch is faster then a manual no question there, manual is both quicker and more efficient then an automatic. Automatic replaces mechanically connected driveline with fluid and a fan, great in the mini-van, not in a sports car.

Porsche desperately needed something to replace their auto, the PDK was a little overdue, but i think they'll ****** a few buyers they were missing who needed something that a non-manual driver could drive and still be sporting.

Back to the question at the top, I'd take manual over dual clutch or sequential in every car except an E60 M5 (and presumably M6) as they screw with the revs in low gears in the manual.

Hey Jason - I remember you from over on M3Post. I cancelled my M3 DCT order and bought a 997.1 manual instead. I didn't "not" buy a PDK, I just got a great deal on the 2008 year Porsche. Of all the things I love about the car though it's the 6-speed I am enjoying most. After 5 years in an Auto I had forgotten how much I love a manual and I don't regret cancelling the DCT order at all.
