PCM3 retrofit into pre '08 997 ?

With the new PCM3's of the '09s with touchscreen, IPOD connectivity, USB port, etc., does anyone know if it will ever be possible to retrofit the unit into the '08 and back 997s that either have PCM2.1 or CDR24 head units?

Also, with regards to the PCM 2.1, does anyone know what type of interface/connection the DVD drive has? Is it IDE, or SATA, or some type of proprietary connection? If either of the former, it would be nice to ditch the DVD drive and use a compact flash card and an adapter as a substitute for the drive data.

It is a proprietary fiber-optic connection & interface called "MOST" by the developer. (I believe it is also used by Audi). It takes purpose-built hardware to communicate with the system (like Dension). There is a fiber-optic loop running from the PCM head unit to the navi DVD to the Bose amp and to the multi-disk CD player if the car has one.

Thanks.

I suppose another thought is to just install the PCM3 head unit directly as a stand alone unit assuming one doesn't need interconnectivity to the MOST loop. I assume the nav is driven by an internal hard drive? Anyone know if it has either analog audio line or speaker outs?

I remember seeing a post about this not too long ago. If I remember correctly it can be done, but the cost was prohibitive (I think it was more than 5k).

im no expert in this matter, but i remember discussing this with JBONDOx and he mention that the harness on the back of the pcm2.1 vs the pcm3 were different. so unless your willing to change out the harness, it wont work.

I think it may not as complex as one would think. I've been studying the connection schematic and plugs at the back, and probing them with a DVM. Someone just needs to post a diagram of the terminal connectors at the rear of a PCM3.0 for comparison. The harness connectors though if different shouldn't be a roadblock with a proper harness adapter, or a rewiring and arrangement of the requisite wires.

For a non-Bose system, you basically only have:
1) socket A which is the power, ground, and switched 12v
2) socket B which is the output to the front and rear speaker pairs
3) socket C which has line outs, telephone mute, cd changer control and AUX inputs (most of which are not used)
4) MOST loop connector

I suppose the key here is the dependence, or lack of, of the MOST loop. Looks like the Caymanclub guys have been busy figuring this stuff out with integrating aftermarket systems.

i've been following the pcm 2.1 and 3.0 retrofit possibities for my GT3 for a while. for the pcm 2.1, its plug and play if you have a non-bose pcm since all 7gt3s come with a non bose amp. to convert a gt3 to bose amp, a bose amp wire harness was required which i was quoted $1500 from the dealer.

with that said, a similar requirement may also be needed for a pcm 3.0. at least that what was mentioned on this thread.
