Is it worth modding my 997?
Is it worth modding my 997?
Is it really worth modding my 997? Cost/performance sucks with this car but I want some more aggressive sound
V-flow intake
Fabspeed bypass pipe
Fabspeed highflow cats
Fabspeed sport headers
Chip
I think thats it

It all depends on your taste .
The car will have an extra zip to it in terms of midrange and sound . The cost to establish it is high but it also provides long term fun.
In my case I tended to pamper the car more after I spent more $$$ into it. Go figure .

However you may be asking the wrong crowd, most guys here spend thousands modding their cars!
It is a passion and if you have it,you won't regret a single mod,no matter how little of an effect it has!
Ask me how I know....spent close to $20,000 in the last year on mods and only drove it maybe 2,000 miles!
I just love knowing that I own a well modded Porsche!
You're gonna spend the cash somewhere, spend it on something you enjoy!
Is it 'JUST' a car to you?
If it is then you shouldn't do it.
Do you enjoy your car?
If you car makes a 'statement' for you, then start the insanity and start modding!
If your car is for the track, once the driving skills progress you will want to go faster so start modding!

PS I have:
Evo intake
Fabspeed headers
Fabspeed mufflers
and I love the sound!
Once the Vf supercharger is installed I think it will be that much better!

Honestly, if you feel the performance is sub-par, you should be looking at another car label. Porsche is not about drag racing / 0-60 / quarter mile. It's about balance and the ability to lap the Ring or other tracks quickly and safely. You could do all of those things you mention, but it's not going to dramatically change the car. Sounds like you need at least a Turbo, maybe another brand.

Best mod I ever did for my car was modifying myself and doing DE's (track days). The car as it sit's stock is very fast around a track. Yes after you mod yourself for a while the car can be made faster at the track. If you are just looking for a better sound then just swap out the stock mufflers.
its not going to be a track car, its going to be a street car. My buddy has an M5 with 500hp. I dont want there to be a race, i want it to be a massacre! haha. I also had the PSE on my 03 996 so im kind of dissapointed with the 997's sound. I like loud and deep sounding exhaust with some nice popping. even though its really bad for your engine!!
Save yourself lots of time and energy.
If you are trying to beat your buddy, write a check for something that will flat out beat it and start to mod that.
The 997 is an amazing car but if you are just trying to beat someone else you are missing the point of how most everyone else enjoys them.

im a gear head, i love this car, i would love to mod this car myself and get the pleasure of working on it as I do my streetbikes! It would be an added bonus to be able to run his M5 though!

I should have started off by saying is the juice worth the squeeze, not is it worth modding my car! I think everyone took it wrong. I just miss my old exhaust tone, deep and loud with the PSE. I heard some people with the bypass pipes, they sound REALLY good and its only $300 (dealer is trying to charge me $396 + 4hrs labor at 120/hr!!). or i can go all out and get a softer note with the full system including intake and chip.
My advice on the exhaust system is pretty much along the lines of NorthVan. The cats are the biggest contributor to hp on these cars. Headers and mufflers really don't add much. Headers along with the cats help fatten the midrange on these cars without adding to much peak hp. If you are going to do headers don't spend an arm and a leg on the things. I say go with the X51 headers and go with 200cpi HJS cats via AWE or Fabspeed. In fact you could make a custom cat pipe for half the money using a good muffler shop and buy the cats seperate. I only spent a total of $2600 for an exhaust system which included everything in my sig, and I am very happy with the money spent and I definitely felt more zip. It's not night and day though but the car definitely sounds better.
Also, don't spend any money on labor for installing an exhaust. It is so simple that anyone can really do it. I uninstalled my old exhaust, installed the new one in under 3 hrs. If you are trully a gear head and really want to get to know your car intimately, there is no better way than wrenching on her yourself.

For a good exhaust tone you cannot go wrong with Fabspeed, AWE, or GMG. After that, if you want real speed then expect to spend quite a bit of money on Forced Induction.
That being said, I would like to see someone spend some money on some NA options and Dyno tuning. Everyone appears to have their own feelings about NA bolt-ons but in the end there is not a lot of real Dyno proof or evidence to support either argument.
