1st GEAR
Give me your car for a week and I guarantee it will shift into 1st gear while completely stopped as easy as it shifts into 6th gear.
IT IS trainable as your syncros need to be worn in for them to work properly. If there is no grinding, the syncros are working as designed and their continued use will eventually make shifting easier. By shifting into first the way you do, the syncros will remain tight forever.

Training
I've been putting this same problem off for some time now. I've scheduled bringing the car in to the dealer but never got to it. Either I don't trust them (some horrible stories in this forum about dealerships) or I just learned to live with this issue
But I'll bring it before my warranty expires.
Like others mentioned they've found their own way/s to deal with it while others say this is not supposed to be normal. Sometimes I push it hard into first and it does work without grinding...if it breaks then it's ok I still have 5 gears left
Kinda sucks though when people think you can't drive this incredible machine

Hmm....well, I've had only one issue with PDK in my car and it involves staring in 1st. Every so often when I step on the gas the engine rev's, nothing happens and then there is a thunk as first finally engages and the car bolts forward a bit. If it ever happens when I'm trying to pull out quickly in front of on coming traffic it could be an issue.
Could just be my car, but the PDK is a bit too new to know yet. Other than that, I am completely enamored with PDK and imagine you will be too. When I drove my M3 6mt for the first time today in about a month I kept reaching for the button shifters!

First, from what he's describing, he has a 6-speed, not a PDK. Second, I think I understand what he's describing and I sometimes have resistance when going into 1st when stopped, too, but what works well enough is to be in neutral, let the clutch out to spin the synchros, and then re-engage 1st. From my experience, I do think synchros "break in" and more miles do make it easier to engage the lower gears where you get more resistance. But isn't the on-the-spot solution at a traffic light to just get in neutral, spin the synchros a little, engage and go?

I bet the sofware problems that arise with the PDK will make this look like nothing, oh yeah it is nothing. This is a syncro problem, not sure the dealer will even go beyond a road test and tell you this is normal.
