Badge removal
+1 on ordering the 911 badge from Eric at Bumperplugs.com. Custom painted Basalt Black Metallic arrived in the mail right away. (Should be a nice contrast to the Seal Grey Metallic paint). Just need winter to end...
Badge Shadow
As 'p0rsch3' and I have the same car, perhaps he/she or other can help. Upon removal of the 'Carrera' badge, there remained a shadow outline, that even a clay bar couldn't remove. You suggested, 'hit the area with some 3M fine cut polish to remove any outlines'. Define 'hit'. Do I need to use an orbital polisher or is a microfiber cloth okay?
easy to do, just need some patience. Let it heat up in the sun, rem0ve with floss, move car to shade and cool paint with some water. I used bug / tar remover after the dental floss to get the residue off, then hit the area with some 3M fine cut polish to remove any outlines. If your pcar has some light surface scratches from washing, you'll see a faint outline where the badge was. comes off easy with the 3M.
Result after replacing with "911" badge (painted custom titanium metallic):

On my past 996 (gone but not forgotten!)

Basically you need to do a really thorough detail on it.
Wash thoroughly with soap & water first to remove any chunks of dirt so you don't scratch the paint in future steps.
Lots of goo gone. More goo gone. Rub it around a bit. Don't leave it on too long as it might damage paint eventually.
More soap and water. Now clay bar to get all the little bits.
I still saw a shadow at this point of just discoloration. Go at it with a polish. I just used my Zaino AIO on microfiber. Lots of gentle scrubbing.
Sadly, it may not be enough. The paint under my original badge was deformed. Whatever, visible within 10 inches, not beyond that.
Regardless, there is only 1 way to fix it: install an SC badge, and with it gain 175 HP!

you can order from dealer (sunsetporsche.com in oregon can get them), they come in black plastic or chrome. Chrome is expensive, black plastic is cheap.
Or, you can buy from Eric at www.bumperplugs.com. Eric can custom-paint the badge for you and his price is very reasonable. You can DIY paint it with a can of bumper paint and adhesion promotor, but for the time + effort spent it is actually better to buy one from Eric (I know, I have painted two of them myself- if you want it to come out perfect and not peel later the process is very time consuming).

I did everything by hand, since frankly I am not confident with my orbital polisher skills.. too easy to burn the paint if not careful. You can remove all of the outline with a bit of time and patience. I probably spent about an hour removing the outline by hand with the 3m polishing compound and some terrycloth.
Use the terrycloth for the outline removal, then use the microfiber for final polish / wax. Something about the terrycloth makes it easier to get the haze off. An old athletic sock turned inside out works great! A clay bar is not the right tool for this job, that is just for getting junk out of the paint. If you are not "feelin it", take your car to a professional and have them do the buff out of the outline. better to spend a few bucks than permanently ruin the finish. Good luck- post some pics when done!!
