997.2 Speaker Replacement

Hey all, hoping I could get some advice on fixing my car's audio. I just purchased it ('09 C2S) but the Bose sound system is a real disappointment (as it was on my prev 911s), and I really need to fix it.

Can someone please let me know what size the standard speakers are in the front and the rear so I can replace them? I'm assuming a simple swap with decent aftermarket speakers will work ok? (ie no AMP/sub changes). Although, if someone has knowledge of upgrading the sub/amp as well that would be awesome, as I'm tempted to overhaul the these too.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm hoping the '09 cars with the touchscreeen don't have problems with speakers/subs/amp being swapped over.

You are scr*wed.
Bose speakers cannot simply be replaced. The entire system is digital and the speakers are 0.5 Ohms (if i am not mistaken). It is a PITA to upgrade that system.

that sucks! I have no idea why Porsche would put such a crappy system in there

Oh well, guess I'll have to get the exhaust done instead

The Bose system is a pretty big disappointment.......no where near the audiophile treat of BMW's current HK system.

However, there are some adjustments that can make it sounded its best.

Try shifting the fader to -1 or -2 to the rear and +1 or +2 to the right for starters.

You'll also find that some songs sound best in surround sound while others come more to life with surround sound off.

It's not a terrible system and with some tweaks is *okay*......just never great.

There is a place here in Orange County that upgrades the Bose systems. They install an amp and replace the subwoofer and midrange center dash speaker. The conversion I heard in a 996 sounded really good. Cost to have it done is about $2000.

I told you all so! I have had the Bose crap before so I ordered the standard stereo which sounds a little better than Bose especially in the mid-range and highs.

Anyway, I can and might one day upgrade the stock speakers but I really do not listen to music much in the car.

Some people like the Bose system in our cars. I find the overall sound to have some serious weird EQ to it making it lack punch in the bass but the lower bass is bloated, edgy mids and sharp highs. The sub lows from around 50hz down are accented and the punchy (ie bass drum) lows from 60-120 are muted. The mids have an edge to them and not very natural or warm and the mid highs are accented around 4-6khz and the upper highs just sound strange.

You're obviously just not used to "the natural recreation of sound the way the artist originally intended it to be heard".

Try setting "listening position" to right (sound/set/listening position). Don't know what the individual settings are but it works for me. Before that this music loving non-audiophile was similarly dissappointed by the Bose system.

Then again this is a drivers car......

Yeah, that is a good one! Being a professional musician and working full time in the music industry I know what it should sound like....and Bose ain't it!

And I guarantee that no producer or artist ever designed their recording to be heard in the strange listening room that is the inside of a 997. The problem with any solution is its put inside a 997. The shape of the room and materials sound hits and the proximity of the speakers to the listener.. its all suboptimal. How does one design a sound system to listen to stereo audio with the left speaker next to my left kneecap, the right speaker 5 feet to the right of me, and some speakers back behind a massive chair. Sorry, but so much of this is putting lipstick on a pig in an attempt to get a good looking pig, when instead, one should realize, its a pig and be cutting out some delicious bacon.

BTW, just realised James lives in Australia (like me). Bose is standard down here...so that's his baseline rather than the 'standard' system elsewhere in the world.....
