Buzzing from chronograph?

I'm getting ready to take my 2007 C4S in for service, but I thought I'd check in here first

I got this car (Sept 27 2007 in service) in early Jan. Pretty much from the get-go, I've heard an intermittent buzzing that appears to come from the sport chrono/center speaker area on the dash. It's audible about 50% of the time, I'd say. It sounds like either a small piece of metal is vibrating or perhaps the center speaker wire is loose or the speaker is buzzing.

It's definitely induced by vibration. You have to be driving to hear it and the more vibration (bumps or even using the sport exhaust), the easier it is to hear.

Has anyone else heard this?

Yep! Have the exact same thing! Going over rougher portions of highway, rythmic bumps, or sometimes my GMG exhaust will set it off. I would say it happens about 50% as well. My experience with getting things like this fixed has not been good so I am probably going to live with it. Sometimes tearing up the dash to track down a little niggle like this creates more problems than it solves. However, I might mention it to your tech rep because it could be common and easily fixed. Glad to hear I am not the only one!

GLTRASK1 is infamous around these parts
cmos- same thing here on my 06 c2-more of a rattle than anything. had my wife ride with me to find where the noise was coming from. to me it sounded like it was somewhere around nav display but she found it and wedged a piece of one of my business cards between the chrono unit and the housing. fixed the problem but have yet to take it in to the dealer. i read elsewhere that this is a common problem.

Good to hear I'm not the only one! My dad (retired doctor) is lending me his stethoscope tonight so I can try to pinpoint the buzz a little better.

I hate to say it, but smacking (gently) around the top of the chrono seems to stop it for a minute.

I agree that dash disassembly is not a good thing. But maybe, if we are lucky, the chrono pops out. Judging by this exploded parts pic (http://www.autoatlanta.com/model/997-05-08/906-01.htm) it seems that the chrono might be held in place by a spring pin sort of like what holds a watch band on. We'll see. I have a service appt tomorrow morning for a ride with the tech.

I'll try the business card trick, but given that my pushing on the chono face with my hand doesn't take care of it, I'm not terribly optimistic.

Glad to see this can be resolved relatively easy! I could never pin point exactly where it was coming from. One of those noises that I swore would move around depending on where my ear was...lol

Is the chrono just pushed into place and not screwed in?...If it is then:
I believe it is held in with a push-in style metal clip and that is probably the problem. The clips relax after time and begin to give you that buzzing sound!
I had this problem in my wifes car(Nisan Altima) and pulled half the dash apart chasing the problem.Once I figured out it was these clips, I took them off, tweaked them a bit by opening them up and put them back on.....no more problem!

Good advice!

However, everytime I chase down a rattle/buzz I end up fixing one and then creating another...go figure...

Well, I went for a drive with a tech from the dealer today and...of course...the chrono didn't make any noise at all. This, despite the fact that it was buzzing all the way up to the dealer.
The dealer was, understandably, not interesting in playing around with it without hearing the noise himself.

Pretty standard.... sorry to hear the buzz would not cooperate!

Jason,
Somewhat OT, but how do you like the OEM SSK? My car doesn't have it, but I would consider having it installed.

OK Guys I can almost bet my car on this...IF it is the Chrono making this noise...then it is those spring clips that hold it in!
Somebody pull it off and then go for a drive and see if the noise goes away!
I was looking at this video to see how it was installed and YES it is those spring clips.
The vidoe I found takes longer to watch then actually do it,LOL!
Here is the video on you tube to pulling it off....

And you won't need their tools to do this job but just be carful!
