the new PSE?
Stuttgart . The engineers of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new sports exhaust system for the latest generation of the 911, available as an option on new models as of February 2009. This special exhaust gives the customer the opportunity to adjust the 911 to his individual, personal preferences also in the car’s particular sound: At the touch of a button the exhaust system switches over to a sporting and emotional sound generated in particular whenever the driver prefers a truly dynamic style of motoring.
The new sports exhaust system is made of modified stainless-steel main silencers and stands out clearly through its two dual tailpipes in unique design. The heart of the system is the exhaust flap on each main silencer activated by the engine’s electronic control system and switching over to a more sporting sound as soon as the driver activates the sound mode. The system itself is activated by a separate button in the centre console varying the sound of the exhaust as a function of engine load, road speed and engine speed.
The Euro base price of the sports exhaust system is 1,610 Euro excluding taxes. In the US the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is 2,500 US$. Starting in April 2009, Porsche will also be offering a Tequipment version for retrofitting

Porsche finally did it right and incorporated a button (just like us guys have done for years) to allow the driver to turn it on or off and not the DME.

"The button" is just the sport button on your dash.
Do not forget the part where it says: "as a function of engine load, road speed and engine speed."
So no, it won't stay open all the time if you wanted it to.

2.5K $ , ugly tips, switched off most of the time, No thanks I'm going aftermarket.

Even then it is not open all the time, that's the annoying part.
I want to see those IRL first, but I doubt they will look a lot better.
Anyway, there is always Cargraphic

Yeah . . . I think you're right.
I was reading what I 'wanted' to 'hear'. They still have those German noise abatement laws to contend with. Since this country is becoming more 'socialistic' (like many European countries) I suspect the same will apply here soon. No I want go off on a rant. Sorry!
BTW: Those exhaust tips are hideous. What were they thinking? I love my 997.1 (driver controlled) PSE even more now.
I ordered them for April '09 delivery
. . . and I must agree that the picture is ugly compared to the previous version PSE. Would have gone with Tubis aftermarket had I known it was going to look like that!
The 997.2 Tubi should available within the next 30-60 days, according to Champion. The price had not been set as of yet, but I'm told about $3,500 plus tips, $700, and labor.
There is supposedly anywhere from a 15-20 lb. weight reduction from the OEM exhaust, more w/PSE, and a claimed 25 rwhp or so. I am not so sure that I believe that there is that much power to be gained from an exhaust swap on a contemporary na sports car. I like the idea of a Tubi, but it becomes quite pricey for an exhaust.
