Did I get a good deal ?
I am amazed at some of the mileage related comments on this thread. 36k miles on a three year old car is high? I bought a 964 C4 with 85,000m, drove it for two years and sold it with 137,000m. I took a $8k hit. Big Deal.
I now drive a 2009 C2S and have 4500m on it since November. It's a car people, designed to be driven. I know these cars are just a fetish for some but realiy, 50k is not high mileage for a Porsche. In Germany they are purchased as daily drivers and rack up the k's pretty rapidly. Most European P-car enthusiasts would be very amused to read this thread!
Oh, and BTW, in two years with the 964 the only expenditure apart from consumables and services were a new clutch and lots of power window switches...

No one is saying one can't buy a high mileage car . I'm saying theres a risk .
I didn't get into the "fetish" aspect but as long as you brought it up I will say this -if I buy a car that someone else picked his nose or passed gas in --it better run well .
.....again, my thanks to everyone for the insightful and objective posts. I appreciate them alot.
We picked up the car Friday afternoon in CT and partied with some friends Friday night. Drove to Inner Harbor Baltimore on Saturday afternoon and spent Valentines at the Hyatt. Finished the drive into VA Sunday morning with great weather and little traffic. It was an awesome weekend and I'm very pleased with the car. It performed flawlessly.
More on the car :
According to the original window sticker this was a European Delivery Spec (customer goes to Germany--picks out the car, drives it, gets it shipped to USA ???) It was a $2250 up charge.
Unbeknownst to me, the car was equipped with two options from the Exclusive Programme. Metal Door Sills ( $415) and the OEM Sport Shifter Kit ($765). NICE !
I've attached some pics of the car and a very rare glimpse of an authentic VW/Porsche Schwimmwagen made for the German army. This thing was off the hook and represented an incredible piece of history.
I'm told it is sold ($200,000) and on deposit of $50k bought by a South African Wine Exporter.
Anyhow....the mandated obligatory pics. Hope you like....

Hattrick - I know that I really rode you on this thread . I do want you to know that I had yoir besdt interest at heart. Since you have gone out bought the car from this point forward I want to wish you the absolute best with it. It is very beautiful. Great pics!!!
I think you got a great deal. You know I never understood the CPO car thing. I bought a private sale car 05' with 12K and did a PPI. Just before I hit 25K and still under factory warranty, I bought an extended warranty for like $2500 and this extended my warranty for 6 years and 60k additional miles from today. If I bought a CPO'd car at the time of original purchase, it would have cost me an additional 5K from a dealer and would have only extended my warranty 2 more years. I got the extended warranty for less $$ and it extended my warranty much longer and for much less. If I were you, just get an extended and drive the crap out of it like it was meant too be driven!! You did good, I would have jumped on the deal you got without CPO and just got an extended!

An extented warranty is not the same thing as a CPO . 1) You did pay 2500 . 2) They are a middle entity and that dealership will not release the car UNTIL they confirm payment and 3) the terms of an extended warranty vary and clauses are carefully written to place the burden of proof to submit a valid claim on you --or face "coverage denied" .
With a CPO it's 6 years inservice or 100K miles. The car is given a 100 point inspection to even qualify and authorized dealership not only backs it but submits the claim under the factory warranty .
Big difference .
Nah. You weren't riding me hard. I asked for opinions and I got them...good, bad, indifferent. Your responses were logical and direct. You've obviously bought and sold a lot of cars and have a wealth of knowledge with Porsche. I respect that.
....and for those that asked for another pic of the driver. This was taken at the Parade in Charlotte this past summer. She's a keeper.
Yeah, looks like that driver is going to cost you more than the car anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about that invoice.
But seriously, putting aside the question of whether this car is the right car, and getting back to the original question (reminder: was the price ok) one can't worry too much about the price. Prices are falling pretty quickly now. I got a good deal on my car on 6 weeks ago, but that's just an ok deal now. In a few more months, it might look like a bad deal.
If one spends too much time looking for rock chips and worrying about what someone else paid for some other car, it really takes the fun out of it.
I try to keep it in perspective. No matter what happens to the prices, I'm still driving one of the most iconic sports cars of all time - the Porsche 911. Enjoy.
