So porsche recommends 15k mile intervals. I feel that I am soon getting to my break-in period (~2600 miles to date) and wanted to get an oil change at approx 3500 miles, thinking it would kind of flush out the gunk that may have accumulated from break-in. Is this logic flawed and a complete waste of money, or is this a reasonable thought? FYI only normal street driving occasionaly drive a little hard if I take it far, but normally drive about 3 miles a day to work and back. Never track.

If you are only driving it 3 miles a day to work and back and only occasionally a little hard, you car is probably not really broken in yet, despite the 2600 miles.

Actually Porsche recommends oil changes at every 2 years or every 20k miles. Most thinking people know that is rubbish.

Under such light driving, I wouldn't change at 3500 mi. Rather, I'd wait for 6500. Or maybe start driving a bit harder and longer now and then change at 5000. There are no hard and fast numbers here. But for sure, you need to beat on the engine a bit more to break it in.

Yes, yes, and yes. The 1st time I would change sooner like 2500 miles.

Right now as a 1st oil change and then yearly or at 6,000 miles whichever is less.

Change oil and filter, and yes you can do it yourself if you know how to do it.

Based on my non Porsche experience and personally speaking, I will be doing shorter then required change intervals ~5000 and doing it myself. IMHO if you are running short distances it is important to change more frequently then recommended.

Your millage may very.

thanks all. Based on various inputs in this thread, I think I will do first change at 4500 - 5k miles to ensure more complete break-in. May look into doing it myself also.

Did mine at 1600 due to the fact that, while the car was a new '07, I bought it in April of '08 and it had been sitting on the the lot for awhile. Will do every year from now on. I drive it about 6000 miles a year.
