PASM+Coilovers

found a nice car to buy, but has PASM...

before i was planning to buy a non pasm and use KWv3 but with pasm im not sure what happens if you use a coil not equipped for pasm (of course pasm wont work but im guessing it also sends an error code or something else doesnt work right?)

what brand coilovers work with PASM?

Bilstein Damptronics are the only ones ive even seen noted when searching back.. anything else?

also the car is a cab, but im guessing that doesnt affect the coils but just the mounting points are a lil diff and harder to get to?

Coil Overs are the same for coupes and cabs. Bilstein are the only PASM compatable system. I have them and think they work well.

just soo many questions in my head, sorry guys to keep bothering you..

i read somewhere on here that lowering with springs on PASM equipped cars doesnt hurt the shocks nearly as much for some reason.. so would just opting for springs be super crappy? or would effective and not cause too much harm?

im pretty sure im going to buy this car tomorrow and just trying to see my options... here are the wheels i will be putting on it (i had the other car all lined up and bought them and then porsche financial pulled out.lol)

If you switch to a set of coil overs not compatibl with PASM you have to go to the dealer and have them plug in the PWISIS tool and turn off the error codes. Plenty of guys at the track do this.

I think that if you are going to go real low you will get a better ride with the KW V3 than with the Bilstein. I found that the lower you go with the Bilstein, the ride gets much worse than with the KW V3 where people say that the ride is not as negatively affected as much when you go low with them. I can only go so low because of the GT3 lip, but if I did not have the GT3 front, I probably would have switched out to the KW V3. More adjustability in terms of ride height (without sacrificing ride) as well as rebound and compression. There are ways to getting around the PASM warning so you don't get a dash light if you use a non-PASM compatible coilover.

That being said, I am very happy with the performance of my Damptronics.

thank you...

gotta debate now... if im going to remove the shocks anyways i might as well try just lowering with springs first... that way PASM still works and if they blow i can always upgrade to disabling PASM and KW's... hmmm..

im guessing CAB has way different weight ratios top up versus down so my drop might be kinda messed up with springs tho :-/

i hate modding cars sometimes..

For some pics for you to look at.....click on my username 'justatoy' and go to my 'albums'.
My car has PASM and was turn-off by the dealer. It can be reversed at any time if/when the stock set-up will be put back in.
I found myself (when PASM was enabled) riding in sport mode all the time.
So not having PASM was NOT a big deal to me.
It is a nice option to have when selling the car though,I do believe it is a sought after option.
Anyway, check the pics out in my album, hopefully they will help you out.

What do you plan on doing with the car? A lot of track time?

Bilstein is the only manufacturer of PASM compatible electronic dampers...for Porsche, Nissan, and many other manufacturers. Their adjustable height coilovers are very nice, and probably suitable for most drivers...even on the track. IMHO, it would probably take an advanced driver or someone who spends greater frequency at the track to exceed the capacity of the Bilstein Damptronics.

If your car has PASM, you will either need to use springs with the stock dampers, Bilstein Damptronics, or have a dealer turn off PASM using their PIWIS computer.

If your car does not have PASM, you have the freedom of chosing any non electronically controlled damper system...from KW to Motons.

Just to interject my opinion...I really think PASM is a gimmick. Porsche should have offered dampers with multiple adjustments as a track package, instead of a 2 way electronical control. At least on my 997TT, the soft setting is WAY to soft, and the firm setting is just to extreme. Hopefully Ruf is going to help me out.

PM me and I will send to a guy that can steer you to the right product if you want to disable PASM and do height adjustable coil overs. Personally if you are not tracking-DE/racing I am not so sure I'd disable PASM and go with track/racing type of coilovers. You might just need some springs to lower the car...but some say that the PASM shocks blow out after 10-20k miles.

Some brands of springs lower the car more than others. I have read and heard of great results with Techart springs. Ask Sharkwerks on this and other forums...they have done this type of work before. Also Champion down in Pompano has had good results with the springs they use.

I'm at about ROW height. I do not have an exact measurement, but I plan on checking my height soon. I had the height raised soon after I installed the coilovers (self installed). Had a indy shop raise the height, align and corner balance the car.
