997.2 3k Mile Review - Love & hate comparison with GTR
997.2 3k Mile Review - Love & hate comparison with GTR
The first two thousand mile break in on the 997.2 cab was quite torturous. Once I got passed that point I got to open the car up and see how it performs.
My comparison expectations come from owning a Z06 and a GTR. I know the 997 TT would be more in the league but at the current moment the 997.2 cab was the best buy for me.
Here is what I like about the 997.2 Cab
Convertible
Great for warm days especially in Socal. The top comes up and down quite fast. The fact that you can open the top while driving is a nice feature.
Interior
Can't complain, very well done.
Nav & bluetooth
Great interface and easy to use. The XM traffic is great and the reroute feature works as advertised. There is a lot more cool stuff and I am sure you guys know already.
Exhaust Note
For me, it's well done. It's quite around town and opens up nicely when your on the throttle. Enough to enjoy the sound and not get you in trouble.
Steering feel
Amazingly precise and solid. Far superior than my other cars.
Car Size
Low to the ground but not too low where you are scraping everywhere. Also the small size of the cab makes it easy to zip around town. In addition, much easier to park in tight spots.
Suspension
For me, the car is a bit softer than the GTR. So, it makes long trips comfortable in a sports car. For all around driving with corners the car is quite solid with no issues of body roll for the streets.
Acceleration
Around town the torque is quite decent. It has the power to have plenty spirited driving on the streets.
Build Quality
The car is built solid.
Here is where I see the contrast.....
Brakes
The GTR brakes feel quite superior. In the aspects of pedal feel, brake modulation and braking power.
Performance
When I got a hot foot. The 997.2 feels quite weak to the GTR. I can barley get the wheels to spin loose from hard acceleration. I feel the major difference on the freeway when I am trying to pass somebody. It's much easier on the GTR, where the Porsche I might have to think twice about it.
Handling
I know I am not used to the 997.2 like my other cars. It's going to take some time. But in the GTR feels like its on rails. There is no fear if it breaks loose around the corner, it would be easy to correct. The Z06 is just a torque monster where you just have to modulate the throttle around the corner. Since the weight in the 997.2 is in the rear, I need to get some experience to see how it needs to be driven properly to its limits.
Trunk Space
I know. It's tiny. Don't go to Costco with the 997.2
Cup holders
It's a sports car, I know
In conclusion. I am sure the 997 TT would be more comparable to the GTR in the AWD handling and performance. My plan is to enjoy the 997.2 cab for the summer. Maybe keep it a bit longer and let somebody take over my lease if possible.
Then maybe move on to a 2011 TT cab, GT3, or a ZR1.
Here is a pic of my GTR with a ZR1 I spotted in town. I was excited when I saw it and took a picture.

Of course, here is a pic of the 997.2 cab of mine.

Nice car collection .
Brakes - I replaced my steel brakes with Brembo . Pic below of brakes. The car stops on a dime now and with 700 Hp on tap I felt it was needed .
Performance --Gtr is fast -- It may even pull a stock Turbo . I had one behind me and I thought it was an ordinary Acura at first glance as I was just leisure cruizing he pulled in front of me and with a three car length head start (open road) plus momentum he hit the pedal . I caught him inside of third gear . He had nothing on the straights against a 700 . A rolling start is a modded Turbo's real strength .
Since then my car got updated software plus a race exhaust (no cats) . It's even faster now .
Trunk space --soft luggage or the rear seats help. I don't use the trunk much myself . It's not a daily driver.

The GTR is great. It's quick (not insanely fast like a modded Z) but enough to have some insane fun on the corners and amazing acceleration. Then when you want to drive it civilized it feels like a normal coupe.
Maybe one day I will have a safe run with my bro's 08 TT and see how they do.
Nice setup you got. HRE, Brembo, Engine mods....it reminds me of my Z06. I am really going to try to stay mod-free as possible, I learned my lesson $$$$

A stock Turbo is quite weak in comparison . You might pull yoir brother's car because the Gtr is a formidable opponent .
The 997tt is a luxury car in many ways . It's comfy like your cab and with the Turbos even the race exhaust can be subdued with light footed driving to hear the Bose and drive quiet (as the sound wave is being homogenized by the Turbo's impeller) .
This all around character makes it a great supercar with daily driving creature comfort .
You have three beautiful cars and if at some point you get the Turbo bug it will take a bit extra to take it to the next level . You will a lot of fun along the way though .

Re Size: the 911 is the same length as a Z06 actually. It seems smaller because the Vette is taller in all corners.
On the negatives:
Re Brakes: P-cars have some of the best brakes in the business. What you're feeling is just a user-interface difference.
Re Performance: Yes P-cars are not tire smoking 1/4 mile straight-liners. They thrive applying power to the ground without spinning. But you probably knew that.
Interesting, need to look into that. The 911 feels much smaller.

Actually I get ticked off when the wheels spin or chirp in my M3. I love that they do not in my 997S because of the rear weight balance.
Once you get used to jumping on the throttle earlier when exiting a turn, go try and do the same thing in your Z06 and see what happens!

Before I read your thread, I had already guessed what the feedback would be. You, being a Z06 and GT-R owner, will find it difficult to pacify yourself performance-wise in other sports cars. You have two upper echelon examples with those, not many can compare. I also thought about getting into a 911 cab as a cruiser, but I know myself and would immediately start thinking I should have gone TT cab. Then I'd have to mod it, because I'm a nut like that.

On the modded Z06, you can be on the freeway on 2nd gear and sometimes third gear and have the tires break loose a bit when your hitting the sweet spot on the torque. Not breaking loose from the shifting but actually in gear from the huge amount of torque. This comes in handy when you have a tailgater that won't back off in traffic.
