Used Inventory
One of our local dealers has 2 07' C2S, 11K miles each, Basalt Black/Black, Sport Chrono, Bose, Sport exhaust and PCCB's. I think they are asking 62K. I know they are a bit out of your range, but man, that seems like a decent deal to me. I'm sure they'll come down a bit too. Gonna to check em' out tomorrow.
Getting CPO
Right, didn't you tell me, what's your spending limit, then add $8k to it!
Seriously, you don't want to spend $50k and get a toad. Personally, I would stay away from a car with an aftermarket suspension. If you look at '05's, you should be able to get one in the low 50's AND get it CPO'd. That's your best bet.

"Launch cars"
What's the significance of being a "launch car"? Is it good or bad?
1) be bought at a Porsche dealership
or
2) Transferred if a CPO car is sold.
Okay, I've had not a single reply to my post. My instinctive feelings are that no comments means that no one wants to deliver the bad news. I ask this, of those of you who seem very well acquainted with the market for 997's here. If all the good, used, low mileage and well equipped 911 cars and deals are gone, please at least let me know so I can make plans to address it.
I've dreamed of owning a 911, almost forever, but if it won't be possible, I need to make other plans. Either with a Cayman S or, horrors, a non-Porsche. Neither are my choice, but I await your information.

This is a rather disheartening thread to read. I have been doing extensive research over the past month, or so, looking into purchasing a used 911. This effort was initially based on recent recommendations from local friends that own Porsches, and other local Porsche club members that the prices for good, used 996-997 911's, were at rock bottom. Well, that and the fact that at the prices I was told to expect, there seemed to be no other car that could possibly perform at the level of a 996/997 series 911.
I was originally targeting a 2004 911 Anniversary edition, and thats where the vast bulk of my research was focused. Very recently (the last couple days following a Porsche meet that I attended) I've decided that a low mileage, reasonably well equipped, 2005-2006 C2 is what I really want. I would love a C2s, but my budget simply cannot go reach that far.
I am in the process of refinancing my home, taking some money out, and selling my present vehicle to support the purchase. The car would have to be bought somewhere between the end of July and mid September.
If it's really true that the availability of good used 997 911's is quickly diminishing, and prices are rising significantly, I may have have seriously miscalculated. Unfortunately, this is my one opportunity to ever own a great car, and hopefully, a 911. Now you have me wondering whether I need to scrap the idea, forget the dream of a 911, and default to another manufacturer/vehicle option. You guys seem to have signiicant knowledge about the current market, am I too late?

I think you can still make this happen for you. I remember asking you a few pages back on some of your requirements and you were saying 2005-2006 model year, under 15k miles, $40-$45k, and a few nice options. I just looked on autotrader and put in 2005-2007, under 15k miles, and capped the price at $50k. Up popped 14 cars. Pretty interesting variety and a few that looked pretty good. You are right that it will be tough to get into an "S" here but there is one (that I know for a fact has been listed for a long, long, time). There's even one Cab and one Targa.
Keep looking and don't feel the market is passing you up.
Done. Traded in 06 Z06 w/29.5K mi + $23K for 07 atlas gray C2S w/PCCB and sport bucket seats, appx. 11K mi. Car was listed at $62K w/a CPOW out to Feb 2013. My only negative about it (before the test drive) was the tiptronic. Wasn’t sure if it would take away from the control and overall enjoyment of the car. However, having slugged through traffic for 2 hours on the west side of Manhattan on Friday w/the Z (I mostly drive w/in 5 boroughs, LI and NJ) and coming to the realization that the tip is going to shift quicker than I ever could (gotta know one’s own limitations) I decided to jump in – also my GF can now drive in the event I'm unable. Just don’t know how she’s gonna feel about those seats, though.
6Speedonline forum commentary was invaluable to me in coming to a decision. Yeah, I didn’t post any “what do you think its worth” or “I’m looking at a CS2 w/etc” inquiries b/c you can get a good enough of a sense about this stuff from reading prior posts, so thanks guys/gals. I included the sale info for price transparency purposes for others who are looking. Best way to levelize the playing field is w/info. If you’re looking in the northeast, I recommend Princeton Porsche; sales reps. Steve and Richard were cool throughout. Also, not sure how common this is but, while I was waiting to have my Z appraised, a customer showed up in a 959.
I pick her up this Thurs., so, I’ll post some newbie/amateur assessments of the seats, tip and the brakes when I get a chance. My points of reference for caparison will be the Z06 and an E46 M3.

Nice car, fellow NYer! I drove into Manhattan yesterday and I've never survived better in a stick than I did in my car. The clutch is stiff, but not brutal and it is very tractable down to low RPMs in 2nd gear.
I had a SMG M3 so my wife could drive it. Owned it for 4 years. She drove it once. I bought a stick this time.
PCCB brakes and CPO'd for that much money... well done. I guess the difference in price may be the tip. It is amazing how the PCCB's don't figure that heavily into resale. Enjoy!

Yes it was. They had 2. I went out to look at the 6 speed but that was gone. So they said take a look at the tip. Understand that I was in traffic for 2 hrs in the rain on Fri. working the Z's clutch all the way up from Brooklyn to Riverdale. I think my left calf is now larger than my right. In short, I was open to suggestion by the time I arrived. Don't think I'll have any regrets.
I just missed out on a second car in the last two weeks that I was considering purchasing, and I am starting to believe that there may not be much out there worth buying now. Earlier in the week, I had the dealer that involved agree to take it to the local Porsche dealer for a full inspection (including DME) that I had arranged for. It was scheduled for the next morning and what happens........someone came in during the afternoon and wanted to purchase it right then and there, obviously didn't care about any kind of inspection, so boom, the car was gone.
The supply of nice cars, with the options needed, now seriously seems to be drying up, or worse, yet, may be gone. This doubly depressing, as I just completed the re-financing of my home to get a lower rate, and also, to provide the majority of the funding to buy my first 911, something I have wanted to do for at least fifteen years.
Even if you move quickly, getting the information you need, arranging for an inspection/DME, etc. can easily cause you to lose out on a vehicle thats located a long distance away.
I've been looking for a 2005-2006 Carrera 2 (or preferably 2s) in excellent condition, with 20k miles or less, full leather, power seats, Xenon's, PASM, Chrono, and Bose. And available at a reasonable price, of course.
Honestly, there is not a single car out there online now that I have a desire to buy If this doesn't change fairly soon, I may have to give up on the 911 I've always wanted, and possibly consider a Cayman S (because of availability), or something else entirely, which I really, really didn't want to do.

Slapshot - I am not familiar with Michigan but an auto trader search had me agreeing with your opinion . In contrast to Florida I was surprised . The selection was somewhat limited and the asking prices appeared higher .. especially on nicely optioned low mile cars .
I did find quite a few in my area. I don't think you have to travel as far as Florida to buy a car but i do think you might consider extending the radius of your search at this time.
