Used Inventory
Slapshot - It's also gonna take some patience. They're around (maybe not Michigan, but...) I wouldn't "settle" for a Cayman if you prefer the 911. I'm sure a Cayman will run w/a 997 but as superficial as it sounds, the 911 looks better (IMO). In the end, you'll be paying a lot for something you were luke-warm about. You'll have remorse the minute you close.

I agree, don't settle for anything less. You'd rather wait than wonder down the line what you'd missed everytime you see a 997 pass by. Just like how you waited for the refinance rate, that worked out well for you. Good thing comes to those who wait.

Jenk .. look at this 09 pdk launch car with an asking price of 75K http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false
If slapshot was looking for a base 997 under 50K this looked nice. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false
For the baragin shopper who wants PDK /Sport Chrono/ and good pricing .. a used launch car with MSRP near 100K asking 75K is a nice huge discounted chunk bitten off .
Most who buy cars factor in the color as important . Some cars like speed yellow have shown accelerated depreciation and this green color may be the next great bargain but an 09 S at these prices is quite a deal .
I totally agree. Now, when Porsche (VW) launches the 991, I hope they come to their senses and send out some cars that have the 'must haves' like PDK with SCP. I just noticed the local dealer here has an 09 C2S cab in basalt with red interior, alot of the must have options except SCP! I had the 05 launch cab C2 with SC, tip, full leather, Bose, etc...only thing missing was nav. In my opinion, they did that particular car right. Now, the only reason I would move into a 991 would be color. My car has exactly what I want, I just might get bored with the color over time. Of course, after getting these great deals never to be had again, I would have to look long and hard at the numbers before moving into an MSRP new car in 3 years or so. just my .02 cents!
And, I would have to 'consult the numbers' with you before buying another car!

Thanks so much for the recommendation, yrallis. I greatly appreciate the help, and have tremendous respect for your knowledge of the market. This is a nice car, but it doesn't meet my requirements, as noted before:
"I've been looking for a 2005-2006 Carrera 2 (or preferably 2s) in excellent condition, with 20k miles or less, full leather, power seats, Xenon's, PASM, Chrono, and Bose. And available at a reasonable price, of course."
This is the one remaining chance in my life to get the right car, and I have to make it happen.

Slapshot . It's hard to get it all when shopping used and having a defined price boundary. Cars with Chrono . leather, and Bose ate the most desireable and with that comes the higher price --even with 15-20K miles. The difference between a base 997 without one or two of thse things Vs an S which has all three can be 10 grand (same model year) . At 42K vs 52K it can tap out the buy opportunity.
If the options you list are must haves you'll have to go upper 40's even on an 05 car to close it and low 50's on an 06 . That 06 car with those options CPO or well kept has been holding string to that 50K bottom . It has yet to break through it . The resilence of the value in the 997S cars has been extraordinary after it takes the initial hit .
Oddly enough the largest price bargains appear on the new cars which is revealing itself on this forum as so many new car owners are becoming new 6speed members .

Yrralis,
I agree with your thoughts, but have had two cars that met my requirements appear recently in my price range, but as noted, I lost both of them to another buyer while trying to arrange a Porsche inspection and DME. It's quite a bit more difficult to buy at a distance because it simply takes more time. I appreciate the advice and I will keep looking. I may well end up with a 2005, but I'm okay with that. I'll arrange an extended warranty to cover things too, just in case an IMS failure, or other serious issue ever appeared.

Extended warranty
Who can you get extended warranty from? How good are they?
Thanks,
Jim

The below don't exactly meet your requirements, but I think they look like pretty good deals:
Here's one really great deal for a GT3 look 2005 Guards Red C2 at 41K. I've seen the owner posting about this car here as well and he obviously took great care of it.
Here's another where the owner has listed at about 50K and is definitely willing to bargain ... and this is on a 2007 Guards Red C2.
Bottom line is, you have a lot of options in your list that belong on S models and the bottom of the market for regular C2's, not C2S's, is what's in your price range at the moment. So either you wait for the market to move down (which may or may not happen), you wait for an incredible deal from a dealer (which can and will be jumped on any time by other people because they are looking too), or you work the private seller angle.

rkuo,
Thanks very for the suggestions, and I think that considering more private buyers may well be good advice, and I will look into it. That Guards Red GT3 lookalike is an amazing looking car, has clearly been taken superb care of, and has all the right stuff. However, it also has double the mileage I could live with, or I would be all over it. I have to be very careful concerning mileage since I will likely be driving the car as my daily driver for the next ten years (7 months a year).
I can actually extend my budget to 47, maybe even 48k, IF the car has some warranty left, or an extended warranty. Even if it's just enough to get me through to next spring, I could delay having to pay for the extended warranty up front, and put that money into buying the car now.

You should consider more private seller options, Slapshot ... they are usually willing to bargain a little, and if you get the right seller, they take great care of their cars. They also will not sell the car to someone out from under you waiting for a DME because anyone that doesn't want a DME would probably be more trouble than someone that does!
