Moon roof retrofit for 997.1

I searched this forum as well as the web and I don't see any information.

The obvious answer is "anything is possible with money" but is there a relatively quick and reliable way to replace the opaque sunroof panel in a 997.1 with a glass or plexiglass panel instead? I don't want to have some idiot rip apart the roof and install an aftermarket unit.

No disrespect but why on earth would you want to do that.
-and may I kindly add.....don't do it!

I have a button on mine I push and it becomes clear.

But I know what you mean - I miss the glass roof from my BMWs. Although I rarely opened it, so maybe this is better; makes me do the right thing.

Targa for me too next time, maybe, if not a cab.

Dave - woudn't you need to install 2 sliding panels? One on the outside (the glass one) and another shade on the inside a'la BMW etc. If so it would need the roof pulled apart surely?

I should have anticipated the targa comments :-) It took me 2 years to find the right car in terms of colors, transmission, and condition. Wish I could have found the targa4 version, but that's like a needle in a haystack. IMHO, Porsche is late to the game on everything - DFI, electronics, moonroofs, etc. Sure they focus on more important things related to driving experience, but while they were the most profitable car company in the world they should have allocated an engineer or two to replace the archaic sun roof with a moonroof and sliding shade just like every other manufacturer seems to offer. If you don't understand why this is frustrating, you don't live in a state where it's cloudy 9 months a year.

And most of all, that darn engine is hanging off behind the rear axel! Who the heck builds a car with the engine there ? Obviously, they don't like coners in Stuttgart, or something.

More seriously, have you looked at RoW (Rest of World) cars? Maybe porsche builds them with a glass part for another market. So you would just be getting the roof piece for europe or asia instead of having it done custom.

Seems unlikely, but it would be a good start.

I am well aware what your weather conditions are like, up here in BC we get more rain then most should have to deal with, however if I had the choice between the current roof, a glass roof, or no sunroof on my 997, I would choose the no sunroof option.

I do have the glass roof on my Touareg, which I keep the shade open all the time, but for some reason it has never made me miss it in the 997.

Fair call on the electronics side Dave but I think you're being a bit unkind with the roof. Doesn't a two panel roof weigh more and that weight would be high up, just where you don't want it?

This post made me have a flashback to my 1981 Toyota Corolla hatchback - it had 2 removable panels - a black solid one and a clear one - you choose! - with a vinyl soft case to store them in since they didn't roll back - had to be manually removed and strapped down in the back deck.

Seems like my '85 and possibly '90 BMW 325's didn't have clear panels either - can't recall really when I first had that...

I'm really sort of liking that the 911 makes me open it up though - makes the entire experience more endearing.

I'm not sure - a 2 panel roof (one clear glass moon roof and one light weight sliding shade) may not weigh much more than the current car colored opaque panel. I've had moon roofs on every car I've owned for the last 15 years so I'm really used to getting the extra light in the interior without getting whipped by the wind and I miss is on my 911S. Not a huge deal - just thought I'd see if there were any options out there.
