?? I don't know. But then again, I don't have a 997, so I'm just guessing.......so, you don't have the sport chrono package so you got a sport exhaust switch instead?? You don't have a "Sport Plus" mode?? Enlighten us. Or maybe just enlighten me.

Not very common to have the option of the PSE button separate from the Sport control, but other than that ?????

Or is the oddity that the buttons are dirty? Looks like PSE button gets the most use, followed by Sport...

Never seen a PSE button along side a sport button. usually the sport button turns the PSE on and off.

correct! if an PSE system is fitted, the quiet/loud option is controlled by the "Sport" buttom at the same time.

If the car doesn't come with Sports Chrono (thus no "Sport" buttom), then the PSE specific (i.e. the exhaust tip like buttom) will be fitted instead.

Ah, I'll try my shot at the trivia answer. If it didn't come with sport chrono, it wouldn't have the sport button, so that's not the answer. Could be a dealer addition of PSE, that couldn't be coupled to the sport chrono for some reason. I know the PSE is also available from Porsche, perhaps the non-option kit comes with this dedicated button.

ryem3, you got me wrong.

PSE is a seperate and independent option to Sports Chrono.

If car comes with Sports Chrono, it has got "Sport" button. And if you opt for PSE as well (no matter you check this upfront or retrofit it later on), the PSE control will be fitted into the "Sport" button according to the install instruction. Unless you want to seperate the control, then you may have two buttons.

If car doesn't come with Sports Chrono, thus no "Sport" button, then you have to put in the PSE dedicated button.

When you order a PSE system (for retrofit), it does come with the PSE button. So it's up to you to install it or wire it with the pre-existing "Sport" button, if any.

OK . . . . Here's the real skinny!

Car came equipped w/ Sport Chrono and no PSE. I installed my PSE a couple of years back w/ a stealth rocker on/off switch in the ashtray compartment. I always wanted it to 'appear' OEM or factory so that switch lingered in my 'need to change pocket'. So when 'Trekky' (sp) placed a severe itch in my a** when he reported he used the 'double exhaust' button to implement a PSE on/off function I decided it was time.

So . . . . . I used a dremel tool + sanding to carefully open up another button slot for the 'double exhaust' button that I pulled out of a panel that was made for a PSE equipped car w/ no Sport Chrono. I devised a mounting/swivel action to clone the factory button feel and mounted a miniature tactile momentary switch behind it. I wired that switch to a latching circuit w/ a small relay that provides 12 volts to the PSE solenoid. I even mounted a small LED to illuminate the button; couldn't match the factory illumination but it worked OK.

So here's the details . . . .

1. Function panel from Sunset Porsche . . . . $60
2. New (unmolested) ashtray from Byers . . . . $53
3) Latching circuit electronics . . . . $30
4) Misc wire, etc. . . . . . $5
5) Modification time . . . . . 6 to 8 hours (my time is worthless)

5) Satisfaction . . . . . Priceless!

I didn't shoot any step-by-step pics but if anyone is interested in more detail drop me a PM.

AP, it is nicely done! I think it just looks great. And now you can even seperate the functions with different buttons!

Really nice work with the dremel AP - looks completely stock.

I also made my own latching circuit to use the factory button to control my after-factory (self installed) PSE. Since I don't have Sport Chrono I just tied into the factory PSE button strip that came with my PSE (no custom dremel work required). Used the other side of the relay output to light up the factory LED when the PSE is "on" (solinoid 'off). Appears stock but no DME intervention to control noise.

Thanks for the dremel kudos. I'll be honest my son did most of the dremel work; much steadier hand than mine. That was the most time consuming job since if you messed up all would be lost.

On your implementation did you have to open the 'function panel assembly'? That assembly is made not to be taken apart since it's held together w/ four (4) plastic tangs on the rear part (black plastic) that are pretty rigid and don't like being bent. They would rather snap off than flex. Since I had to order a complete assembly I had one spare in case sh*t happened. It did!

On your implementation did you utilize the unused portion of the internal circuit board (the one that has the button pads, logic, leds and connector)? If you did . . . . kudos to you for figuring out what part of it was unused. My circuit board had a 'blank' location behind the button I installed that was marked as 'reserve' but no apparent circuit tied to it other than the 'etched button pad'. I thought about using it (especially the LEDs) but it would have required modifying the Porsche circuit board and I feared that I might affect the other functions (ie. spoiler, shocks, sport or PSM) if I screwed up.

What sort of 'PSE button strip' came w/ your PSE?

Any way . . It's done . . . IMHO looks absolutely OEM (unless you're familiar w/ that panel) and my **** obsession has been squelched for awhile .
