Extended Warranty

A repeat of another thread a few months ago.

Any recommendations on purchasing an extended warranty on a 997 about to be out of warranty?

I'm asking too. I know that you cannot get a Porsche certified warranty when purchasing a used car unless a Porsche dealership makes it so. I'll be buying a 997 car soon, and could use some additional info. Thanks for your help.

Who do you deal with for aftermarket warranties? What do they cost, how long can you extend them for, and how much do they cover?

I have a 2006 BMW M5 which is going off warranty soon. I looked at pricing for extended warranties and found them to be pretty expensive (I have almost 50k miles on the car, hence the expiring warranty). I decided against the warranty and bought the extended maintenance which cost $3,400. The driving factor in the decision is that the car is going to need brakes soon, at a cost of $2,900, and the extended maintenance covers the brakes. The full warranty was closer to $5-$5.5k IIRC, wouldn't cover a maintenance item like brake pads and rotors.

I just picked up (on Friday) a "new" 2008 CS2 Cab which was an executive car (meaning it was driven by one of the dealership principles for a while) and it had 4,300 miles on it. The car looked great and was ideally equipped (meteor grey, full black leather interior, sport chrono, adaptive sport seats, a few other things) and I got a pretty good deal on it (not quite as good as some on here have suggested). The catch is that the in-service date was technically in November 2007, so there are 27 months of warranty left. There is a 6-year, 60k mile (starting from now) Platinum warranty available for about $2,200 from Fidelity through the dealership which I've decided to buy, because I'll have long-term peace of mind. The mileage should be fine because it's not my DD. Your situation may vary, but that was my thought/decision process for the 2 cars...

Thanks for your input, bweile.

I may be purchasing a car very shortly, and still am not sure of the answers to these questions:

Who do you deal with for aftermarket warranties? What do they cost, how long can you extend them for, and how much do they cover?

I will need somethign quickly to cover a 2005-2006 997 series car with less than 25k in current mileage. Thanks for any help.

Below find some of the posts about warranties from the Jan. 2009 thread.

Personally, I believe that you will be MUCH better off if you get the warranty from the dealer whom you anticipate will be doing the service, as I've been told by several PCA members. I use two different dealers (different parts of the country) and a tuner (easily my favorite) and right now will probably go with EASYCARE if I go with any. Recent quote for my 06 911S/ 18,000 miles was for 'Total Care' package 84 months from the car's Original purchase date and 60,000 total miles -- $2590 for $250 ded. and $2981 for $100 ded. In other words, because of my purchase date, I'll be buying a three year package. ANYONE buying any extended warranty should spend at least a few minutes checking out the viability of the Insurance Company behind the warrant company.

Previous posts:

"I have done alot of research here in the OC on this topic as I have a 2005 997 with 23,500K miles and want to purchase an extended warranty very soon. I called 4 dealers here and 3 out of 4 offer JM & A extended warranties which is a Fidelity Warranty and have never heard of Easy Care. They swear by it and say they have never had a problem with coverage even though many online websites report negative things about them. The dealers tell me they are the largest warranty company and they are basically the Audi factory warranty provider. One dealer out of 4 told me they offer the Easy Care. The Easy Care is much more and not sure if it's any better. Funny how all dealers have a different story."

"
I went with Warranty Direct. Prices are much closer to 2K with lower deductibles. You can get instant quotes online. Good company owned by Bank of America, so you don't have to worry about them going out business. Plus they spread the cost over 12 months no interest. I haven't used it yet, as my car is still under factory warranty but the local dealer says they easy to use and they bill them directly minus the deductible."

"I have 18k miles and my warranty runs out in September. I called my local dealer and they use EasyCare as well. They quoted me for a 3yr/60K warranty of $3100 w/$250 deductable and $2996 w/$500 deductable. For a 5yr/75K warranty, it was $3700 w/$250 and $3400 w/$500. If I decided to get it, I'll take the $250 deductable policy. They also told me the warranty is transferrable and refundable on a pro rated basis."

Hey, did you get one of those '08 leftovers from New Country in Greenwich? I saw those cars there, they were very nice, but they didn't seem to budge from $85k on those cars. I liked the staff there, but I couldn't get them to come down enough for me on price.
Suprised they didn't CPO the car given that the factory warranty is half over. A CPO deal may somehow still be available?

I started by calling EasyCare (888-315-1263). They sent me info, quotes, and contract fine print. The quote I got was 48 months / 48K miles, $100 deductible, for $2650.

When I went to dealership, so they could fill out EasyCare car inspection form, I found out they also sell EasyCare. Also, since my car is still under warranty, no inspection was needed. I ended up getting EasyCare TotalCare from Porsche dealership instead of EasyCare 800 number. The policy I got for my 2006 911 C2S is: 60 months / 60K miles, $100 deductible, for $2820.

Intersting to see how different (in terms and price) dealerships sells EasyCare. My contract starts from the date I purchased the contract, NOT the car's original purchased date.

For reference, here is contract fine print.

Thanks for that post. It's very helpful. My Porsche mechanic at my dealership recommended EasyCare too. Apparently it has better coverage than CPO. I'm going to buy it when my warranty expires.

5 year warranty on a used car like ours for that much, I'll be curious to read the fine print. I'd be inclined to up the deductible and lower the premium, but it sounds good. I suppose I'd need to search the forum for owner experiences with claims from EasyCare.

The finance person at the dealership let me see pages and pages with EasyCare pricing. One page for $0 deductible, another one for $50, and so on; each page had pricing plans from 30 to 84 months. After reviewing this information, I came to the conclusion that for any given duration, the "sweet spot" is $100 deductible. A $50 deductible increases cost by several $100's, while a $250 or higher deductible did not significantly reduce the cost.

Interesting, thanks for the tip. Were you able to assess if the warranty will cover main seals on our cars?

Hey Conrad,

I got your PM but haven't posted enough to PM you back. I'm resisting the urge to post nonsense posts just to get over the minimum. Please e-mail me at brian.wiele@gmail.com and I can share some of the details on the car. I bought it from New Country.

Regarding the extended warranty/CPO question, unfortunately my car wasn't a candidate for a CPO because although it has an in-service date of November 2007, it's "technically" still a new car because it was never titled because it was used by a dealership principal. They can't CPO a new car. I purchased an extended warranty through the dealership from Fidelity. The dealer sells only the Platinum plan, which has a minimum of exclusions, it's a 6-year, 60k mile warranty (starting from the purchase date) and any warranty work done by the selling dealer carries no deductible. Given that the car is an '08 with only 4k miles on it, it was very inexpensive ($2,200) and it gives me complete piece of mind. The car isn't my daily driver (my DD is an M5), so the 10k/yr equivalent for the warranty isn't really a constraint for me. My prior toy was a 2002 360 Modena and I only put about 2k miles on that car per year. I very much expect to put more miles on this car, but under 10k...I agree with someone's comment to buy the warranty from your servicing dealer, because they will have the relationship motivation to lean on the warranty company on behalf of a good customer, and will like be more effective/persuasive than an individual trying to convince the warranty company to cover something. At least that's my personal rationale...

Hope that info is at least somewhat useful. Drive safely everybody.

Brian

I just picked up my car and it's an 06 S. The dealership said that the prices of the warranties almost double the price after the car exceeds 25000 miles. He also told me that 'his' warranty is not the same as what he was selling at the time of my purchase. Allegedly his warranty is honored by all Porsche of NA.

Is that right?

I don't know the specifics of your warranty, but mine is provided by Fidelity, sold through the dealer, but any claims get made to Fidelity. Other dealers can definitely do warranty work for you, but I think the selling dealer will provide the best service, no deductible, and will fight hardest to get claims paid for customers... YMMV
