997s
Never had a problem with either. Found a small improvement in throttle response when I replaced the stock filters with these items on both the 996 and 997S
I've used both (K&N on my former 996 and currently a BMC-F1 on my 997S) and there's little to choose between them. The nature and type of the filter is the same and the construction quality is similar. They even use the same type of oil in the cotton gause it would seem. Any popularity of one over the other is probably just whim and fashion!

Yes I plan to do those mods in that order...in addition if you havent already done so, get the clear side lenses and ditch the amber ones. You might also enjoy the Porsche OEM short shifter and a hard wired radar detector up near the mirror.
My plan is to get a little hp/drivability bump while maintaining the stock factory look and still be able to easily change back to fully stock should I decide to sell the car one day.
Going to the track is great fun, but its not an excuse to not mod the car if thats what you want. I say do both!
As far as the intakes....the Porsche OEM airbox is pretty darn good. I would advise against going to a CAI unless you just have to hear that sound they make. Especially in Houston, you want to make sure the intake isnt drawing in hot air from the engine bay when its already 100 degrees outside. You can be sure this isnt happening if you stick with the OEM airbox. The fabspeed intake also retains the stock airbox but IMO its a little steep to pay that much for a red hose and an oiled filter.
Good luck!

Lot of discussion and opinions on mods, but for me boils down to learning how to drive the car. Good tires and alignment as a starting point, then nothing more than seat time. In my case, I have an '05 997S that is bone stock and will stay that way until I can drive my car consistently quick. I benchmarked a time in my car driven by one of our instructors and I have a lot of room to improve my driving technique. Our DEs are run at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park on the 3.1 mile layout and he turns a lap about 10 seconds faster on average than me. I have no illusion that I will ever drive as well as he can (former professional driver), but at least it gives me something to work towards. He proved to me what a great car the stock 997S is on the track (running on PS2s). Amazing what these cars can do in the right hands. Enjoy!
Mobonic,
Don't know how the image will come out, but this is the 3.1 mile layout (ignore the red).
My best lap time was a 2:52.899, instructor's best was 2:43.828. The guy is an amazing driver.
Our next event is 9/19-20. What group are you driving with in October?

I ran the same configuration with PCA - San Diego on 5/2 & 5/3
Ut was my first time there, great track and very technical.
My best time was: 2:48:90 (stock)
Im going back in October with same group, I hope to have better times as it will be cooler and I now have more negative camber up front.
Turn 8R was my nemisis, I was getting way to much understeer going into that turn.

Worn PS2's
They barely made the drive home to So Cal !!!
It was 100+ when we were there, so the track must have bee 120-130º
Not as much elevation change as I like on a track though, its very comparable to Buttonwillow.
