Clutch killing my carpet!

I feel like I just can't win. I put a set of rennline pedals on the car (http://www.rennline.com/Pedal-set-4-...nfo/P70.60.51/) because I couldn't reliably reach the gas from the brake to heel-toe (and they looked pretty cool).

So I've had them on the car for a few weeks, and today I saw that the clutch pedal has worn a hole in the carpet at the bottom leading edge of the pedal.

The carpet being worn is part of one giant piece, so replacing it is not realistic.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to stop this from happening going forward? Or what I can do to try to repair it?

Sorry to hear that. It seems like you never know where carpet will get excessive wear until after the damage is done. My only suggestion is to take your floormat to an upholsterer and have him add a bit of carpet to it so that it extends to where the wear is taking place. Or have a custom-made very tiny seperate floor mat that you can put behind the pedals. This will cover the wear area and prevent it from getting any worse.

The carpet thickness of the mat would be at your descretion, just make sure that the carpet is thin enough so that your ability to engage the clutch fully won't be impeded. In fact, first try shoving your stock mat under the clutch pedal if you can and depress it as a test to see how viable an idea this really is. Just thinking off the top of my head -- never utilized this idea for an under-a-pedal application before.

1. Just let it be

2. Take it to a car upholster and he can work his magic for a patch job.

I say just keep driving the **** out of it like you are in your avatar

Maybe that's why they have the floorboard?

I'm also interested in getting those, so more feedback is appreciated.

Thanks to anthony and mobonic for the helpful posts. I'm just trying to not hose the resale value too hard when it comes time to move on. But I suppose that my 72 ignitions at level 5 already speak for themselves.

Daggie,
That's the first thing that I thought of. But they don't seem to have anything for the 997.

I think that you need to look into what is causing the wear. I have the Rennline pedals (which are awesome) and I am not getting any wear at all on the carpet. The rest of the car is not doing as well but that is a different story.

NorthVan,
Can you check your car and let me know if the bottom edge of your rennline clutch pedal is flush with the bottom of the factory clutch pedal stalk? Mine isn't. My rennline clutch pedal is mounted in the middle of the factory stalk (if that makes any sense at all), so that the bottom edge of the pedal curves down below the pedal mount.

Had a similar problem on 996, found that I needed to cut off the screws that went through the pedal. It was not the pedal that was causing the hole, but the extension of the connector screw. Might want to check it anyway.

Well, I figured it out. The Rennline clutch pedal face is curved downward, and the installer had mounted it about 1 cm too low. So I remounted it a bit higher, and it clears the floor now.

This really bugs me.... the whole reason I paid to have it professionally installed was to avoid screwups like this. If I wanted to have the pedals installed incorrectly, I would have done it myself!

Do it yourself whenever you can, as you are most likely a bit smarter than an average mechanic and care more about your car as well. It is not bragging but sad truth of life - why some are driving porsches and some mount their pedals.

Yeah, I guess it comes down to the fact that nobody will care about your car like you, no matter how highly skilled/paid they are. Glad you got it figured out!

I had a different problem with the pedals.
I have the PDK and the Rennline brake pedal was bigger than the rubber side guides that are mounted on the Brake pedal .When I wore regular shoes I found myself "clipping" the back of the pedal when I lifted off to brake . At speed this was a little unsettling.
I finally had to remove the rennline brake pedal and it looked funny missing.
I just had the Rennline Pedal reduced in size by a metal shop and will be mounting it tonight to the rubber backing with the "guides" and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Did anyone follow that ???

It could be your shoes as well. Does the sole have a lip on it (like just about every dress shoe?)
My driving show (Puma Speed Cat) is very smooth on the edges, and I doubt it would catch under any circumstance.
