Why no love for the rear wiper?

Why no love for the rear wiper?

I bring this up because I was talking about it in an older thread. Why no love for the rear wiper? I think it's one of the sharpest design characteristics of the widebody Carreras. On my hunt for a 997.2 C4S I turned away from a few prospects because the wiper wasn't there. Not for functionality but on appearance alone.

I think it looks retro-euro and breaks up the lines nicely.

First I've ever heard of getting the rear wiper for aesthetic reason. Maybe it adds a bit a asymmetry to the design that some may like. I prefer the clean look without it, but whatever floats your boat...it's your money.

Sorry, not feeling it myself. I think it is distracting and takes the eye away from the best view of a 911 (especially a widebody) from the rear which is the hips. Glad it's not on my Cab (not sure if it's even an option on Cab's).

Agree. I think it looks great but it seems to be pretty rare.

I would pass but it would not keep me from a car if the rest was OK and I was getting a good deal

WHo drives their Carrera in the rain??

Wiper being esthetic? I look at is as an aberrant appendage offending the car's beautiful lines or like a 6th finger on one's hand...;-)

You don't drive your Carrera in the rain? My buddy drives his in snow, as will I. I got a smoking deal on a 997.2 C4S - No wiper no go.

So I ordered a 2010.

As I mentioned in the other thread I am not a fan of the rear wiper. Ruins the look for me. I live in a rain forest and have never had issue with my rear windshield when it rains. I probably would not buy a porsche with a rear wiper.

I don't like the look of the rear wiper; those are for SUV's.

Besides, when moving, the rain doesn't stay on the rear window, it's blown off, rendering the wiper functionally unimportant.

Along w/ the XM wart the rear wiper defaces the clean 911 design. Short of a few places, most areas do not need a rear wiper in these cars.

In addition... the wiper is known as the cause of a nasty V-scratch on the C-pillar side, accidentally caused when it flips when dropping it down, say when washing the car...

i think the rear wiper gives the car a turbo look. its an extra detail to feast your eyes on looking at the car from behind

A turbo look?!? The wiper is an option on a Turbo, not a requirement. And as if the Turbo wasn't already a busy design with all its slats and openings. To each his own.

Well I get the feeling based on this forum and talking with friends that the rear wiper is popular with about 30% of owners/enthusiasts. 70% being against.

I ordered it for aesthetic value alone - I'll probably rarely activate it.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to hear if there is any reason to NOT get it, besides aesthetics. Does it flap wildly at speeds over 80, etc.????

See my reply re V-scratch above. It may not happen with you but it could happen if someone lifts it, flips it and drops it. It has happened many times.

Aesthetic value? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The 911 shape is timeless and has endured 40+ years due to its clean lines and absence from items such as the rear wiper - which is an option for a reason. The top pic you posted above with the rear wiper and the XM wart says it all - what an horrible defacement of a beautiful car.

I never actually noticed a rear wiper on porsches. I am happy my car doesn't have one.
