Do I have to bleed to get red calipers?

(no pun intended)

Ever since the 97' 993 4S, I have always admired xenon headlights and red calipers on a 911. They sharpen an already lethal package.

So, I just took delivery of my 09' C2 and I would really like to have the black calipers done over. I have read the posts on the forum and talked with my dealer and a private porsche shop. And I'm confused.

Dealer says $1,300.00 to powder coat ($900.00 of which is labor @ $110/hr). Private shop will paint them for @ $800-900 at $85/hour. Seems like the dealer is quoting by the book for a job that will take less time, while the private shop is really padding the labor time since they don't even have to tear down or rebuild the calipers.

Can anyone share their experiences with changing caliper colors and/or your opinion of these quotes? If the dealer capped it at a $1,000.00 I'd go that route, but frankly I was hoping to spend less. My car is a lease (I presume a well painted caliper is not going to raise any objections at turn in?)

Thanks for any feedback.

Regards,
DRP

Sounds high to me. I had my calipers painted and they have held up great.
I don't remember what I paid, but I know it was much less than $900 (I also removed them from the car myself). I would think you could find a place to powdercoat them for quite a bit less than $900.

The powder coating itself is cheap. $50 per caliper. It's the labor in tearing down and then rebuilding the caliper that adds up. I guess powder coating requires extreme heat and so the seals and pistons must all be removed.

How much time did it take you to remove the calipers and reinstall them. I assume you had to bleed the system as well.

Yes, you do have to bleed the system, so I went ahead replaced the fluid with ATE gold. Bleeding the system is pretty simple. Removing the calipers is fairly straight forward. I'd say all-in- all it took about 3 hours to complete the job of removal, re-install and bleeding.

I know there is a sponsor on this forum that powder coats calipers for a reasonable price, now if I can just remember who that is. Hopefully someone can chime in.

You shouldn't have to break the bank to get your calipers powder coated or painted. Realistically, you should not be paying over $400-500 for a quality powder coat job. There is some labor involved to strip the calipers, colorize, apply the Porsche logo if desired, a final clear coat and ofcourse bleeding the brake system and re-installation. We are in California, if you cant find a less expensive quote near you, feel free to send us your calipers and we can help you - feel free to contact me directly. Thanks and good luck.
