997.1 C2 vs. M Coupe
Having owned a 2007 Z4M for over a year, at the same time as my current 2005 C2S I agree for the most part with pdto. I never tracked either car and did mostly DD duties in city and some mountains. The Z4M was a blast to drive. I actually miss that engine. Short blast with top down was fun, but that front spoiler was scary low. A lot lower that C2S. The C2S feel a lot more planted, refined and precise. Bottom line, I drove the Z4M more than the Porsche. It was just more fun to drive in the daily grind.
I have to agree with what most people brought up here, in my opinion though,
997 is more torquy, smooth, precise, comfortable,
Z4M is more revy, raw, a lot more chuckable but harsh at the same time.
997 has a longer and smooth shifter,
Z4M has a shorter and notchy shifter.
997 has lighter and more precise steering,
Z4M has heavier, less precise steering but faster turning ratio.
997 is glued to the ground,
Z4M is quite tail happy.
997 is fun to drive and very fast when you push it hard, and leisurely comfortable when you choose to,
Z4M is fun to drive whether you push it or not because it just feels more engaging at low speed but it can also be tiring if you don't feel like it.

The only thing I really miss about the Z4 is the convertible part. Also, in my opinion, the 997 is simply more challenging to drive and to master. I've been driving it for over 10 months now and I still feel that I have a lot to learn. I mastered the Z4 in 2-3 months.
I agree with a lot in this thread, but I found the opposite of this. The Z4MC seems more challenging to me than the 997, though I can see the non-M being seen that way. Since the 996 came out, I've found 911s more tame on the street, though still fun and challenging when pushed towards their limits. The thing is, day to day you rarely get a chance to go near them.
i read the european car article and while i liked reading the article, it did not tell me much since the M coupe was down 35hp to both porsches. i did however confirm, as overwhelmingly said here, that all of these cars are very, very good. i know the real answer to my question is get out there and drive these cars and see what the differences are to me, but i appreciate the information and intelligent conversation here.
I picked up the magazine today to read the article. It was a good read, though I would actually have preferred an article comparing a modded Cayman and Z4M to a stock Carrera. I think the more common question among shoppers is whether the 911's performance is worth the premium price, or are you better off spending less on a Cayman or Z4M, modding it and still saving a few grand? That was tangent to my goals when I tweaked my car.
