I Just Don"t Get It - New Boxster

I just read my lastest Autoweek Mag that reviews the 2005 Boxster and they once again state how similiar the 2005 Boxster looks to the 2005 997.

It is hard to believe that Porsche once again makes a Boxster that when looking at it in your rearview mirror you cant tell if it's a 997 or a Boxster.

I agree that I have a hard time distinguishing between the two when i am driving my 996 and see a Boxster in the mirror coming up on me. I am about 50% right normally.

I love the looks of the 996 but there is something that bothers me about the similiarity between the two.

Now Porsche does it again. And they wonder why the 997 is having slow sales. Of course the new Panorama Magazine (Nov 04) which is biased, states that Porsche finally has a Boxster that has it own separate identity and looks.

So, only time will tell on this call.

Best guess is that Porsche is leaving the boxster as is for quite a while and the 998s due in a 1-2 years should prove to be distinguishing enough to the model line up.

998?

Porsche PR has stated that the 998 will not be in the US for at least 7 years.

I htink the new boxsrer and 997 are significantly different looks wise...more so than the 996/986 were

If you look at the Autoweek Pics of the new Boxster, the front looks very similiar to me. I am sure there are minor changes but guaranteed, non P folks will still say, "Nice Boxster" to 997 owners.

I cant tell you how many times I get the "Boxster compliment" when driving my 911.

I wonder if Boxster Folks get complimented on their nice 911?

OK, so the cars look similar from the front. When I'm driving my C4S Cab down the road, and a Boxster/996 approaches from behind, I actually get happy. I don't give a rat's *** which model it is. It's another Porsche nut (hopefully as passionate about Porsches as I am). Leave the writers to do what they do - opine about this or that, confuse readers, stir up controversy - THAT sells magazines!

I have no problem that the Boxster and the 911 have common family traits - so do all Mercedes.

BTW... some consider the Boxster a lesser Porsche. Not so! It is a mid-engine version w/ the 550 spyder heritage.

The headlights of the boxter is is not oval like the the 997. And even if they do look alike, does it really matter? I love the 997 and I am sure the boxter is a great car too.
