How can I get CPO for a 997 by a private seller?

Hi All,

I am looking into buying a 2007 997 with 37K miles on it. It still has the factory warranty on it but I'd like to get it Certified Preowned.

I know that I need to purchase it through a franchise and have talked to Carlsen Porsche about it and, boy, the sales guy was very unfriendly and uncooperative about it.

3 Questions:
  • Do you know any dealers around Bay Area who could give me the CPO?
  • If that does not work, EasyCare seems to be the best alternative. Is that so? If yes where should I get it from?
  • Also, should I get the PPI done where the warranty is sold?
Thanks all!!!

Taylan

I've never heard of getting a CPO in any other fashion than buying it that way from a dealer. Aside from that you're looking at an aftermarket warranty. I had EasyCare and found it to be a great warranty on my 996.

It can be done and some info is here in these threads. I would suggest calling a couple of dealers and getting the GM or the Used Car SM on the line and run it by one of them.

On Easycare: I'd buy it from the dealer I thought I might use for service (if he sells it). Price IS negotiable regardless of the book he pulls out and shows you. While not a particularly good deal I bought their top package, $100 ded., transferable (or partial refund), 10 years from original 1st title date or 60,000 miles, for $2700 + tax. Not cheap by any means but I might keep the car another 4 years and a few even chicken sh** items can add up in a hurry at the normal dealer gouge charges, and I might be able to convince a potential buyer the car's worth an extra 2 grand with the warranty.

Can't think of a downside to your PPI question.

I have spoken with folks at Carlsen Porsche and Stevens Creek Porsche they both said they cannot do it. Their argument is that it they have to spend over $1.000 in labor to inspect the car thoroughly and change tires/brakes/clutch etc. if necessary. That'll be a cost on top.

The guy in Stevens Creek also said that if they buy the car from a private party owner they need to mark up the price before they sell to me. I'll call more dealers as you guys suggest but it is not looking feasible at this point.

Stevens Creek suggested that I wait until 6 months or 5000 miles before the factory warranty runs out and buy 3rd party insurance. They are using Fidelity insurance they said.

This is somewhat correct...any cost they incur on maintenance could be just passed on to you, but putting all the effort into it for them with no profit being made wouldn't make sense to me either. Not trying to be a wad, but if there's no money it in, there is no reason to do it.

It can be done, you just need to find a friendly dealer for it I guess. When I inquired about it, a dealership told me the steps would go something like this:

1) Car needs to be under factory warranty still.
2) You would have to pay for the CPO inspection.
3) Once inspection result is out, you would need to pay whatever is necessary to bring any of the items up to the CPO standard.
4) Once you "fixed" everything, you can then pay the fee for the CPO, which is around $2k.

So depends on the condition of the car, you might be looking at around $3k to get it CPOed.

After reading quite a few posts about Extended Warranties, I came to the conclusion Porsche owners seem to be satisfied with EasyCare. Plus EasyCare has good ratings with Better Business Bureau.
I ended up getting EasyCare from Porsche dealer I bought my car from. I paid $3K for their best coverage (TotalCare), 6 years or 60K miles, $100 deductible.

can't be done unless sold by dealer

I just went through the same issue. I am buying a 997 that was a CPO and has about a year left. I did a PPI at a dealership and asked how to get the CPO extended past the time left on it. I was told the only way I could get one with new CPO is if the dealer actually sold the car, notwithstanding the fact the car passed the PPI with flying colors and is still under the old CPO
