Day two: oil pressure question

So according to the manual's numbers. My pressure seems high. At 3k rpms I'm getting around 4 on the gauge. I'm scared to try and see what happens at 5k rpm.

It's fine, as long as it drops down to 2 or lower at idle.

I'll check the idle. I know that it gets close to 5 at about 80 mph
on the highway in 6th.

In the car now. Slightly below operating temp and oil pressure sitting at 3!

Ok so. At engine temp of 175 and what I assume to be oil temp radi g of 200:
idle is at about 2.5. Driving at mild rpms below 4k I'm bouncing between 3.5 and 5 on the pressure

Oil level is up to the top bar inside the brackets.

It just cane from the dealer the day befor I picked it up where a full inspection was done. I'm sure it's fine but when I see it hitting five when I'm driving mellow it scares me. I don't want to exceed the max pressure when I stomp on it.

Just found this previous thread. Odd thing is I did seat h the forum before posting and the results came back with 1000 hits, of which none of them pertained to oil pressure. I did a google search and it found this.

I guess eveything is fine. I know the purpose of gauges is really to moniter bevavior so Ill keep an eye on it and ask th shop to check the sensor next time I have it serviced.

Unfortunately this idiot guage is just that; I anguished for 6 months when I got mine that it was staying too high and that I had too much oil, even though two different dealers' service managers said "it's okay." Finally got comfortable when a good tech who was also a Rolex driver said the same thing: "if it never drops below 5 or if it drops to zero then have it looked at, otherwise ignore it."

Also, you have a separate warning light on the dash if the oil pressure drops too low; then you turn it off and have it trailered in.

The oil pressure gauge is far from an idiot light, unless the driver does not interpret it correctly... On the M97 engine it tends to run a bit high and that is not a bad thing. On the new 9A1 engine is far more dynamic because this engine has a third on-demand oil pump. On the M96/M97 engines, as I recall, the pressure starts high when cold and drops a bit when the oil warms up. The owners manual has a section on interpreting its reading and it's up to the driver to understand its meaning.

oil pressure gauge

I know nothing about the gauge or interpretation on the 997.2 which I realize is the OP's question; it is great if Porsche has finally provided a meaningful tool. I'll have to check it out next time I'm fortunate enough to be riding in or driving a 997.2

On the 997.1 the measurement when the engine is warmed up tells you nothing unless it stays pegged at the top or at zero, and even then no inferences nor conclusions can be made, other than maybe you might want to have it checked out. I guess it is nice if you are between 3 and 4 at cruising speed, whatever that may be, but so what if it is 2.5 or 4.5?

This lack of functionality has been oft repeated on pca.org/TechQA.
