OEM Steering Wheels

I recently purchased a 997.1 C4S Cab with a stock sport wheel (not MF).

I hate the wheel...coming out of a series of BMW M cars, the thinness of the 997 sport wheel just feels wrong.

So, what are my OEM options (I just can't bring myself to spend what it would take to get a Techart wheel)?

I know dealers sell the Extra Padded Wheel (XPA) and that is as thick as it comes for OEM (and the price seems to be a bit high as well), however, I'm confused by the other options I've seen in the aftermarket.

For instance, is the GT3 leather wheel any thicker than my stock wheel? What about the 2010 GT3 in Alcantera? I'm confident these wheels will fit, but will they be appreciably thicker or is my only OEM option for that M5 feel the XPA wheel?

Thanks in advance for any insight

There is the Thicker sports steering wheel. Not sure if it is option XPA - but that seems like the best OEM option for a wheel. RUF makes a wheel not sure on pricing.

I know what you are going through, the M5 wheel was great. If I was going to change out my steering wheel I would be very tempted to go with Techart as shown in this photo of yrralis1's 997 Turbo. But I know it is more money than I can justify currently.

Maybe take a look at this 2010 GT3 wheel for sale here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ing-wheel.html. Not sure if it's much thicker than a normal wheel, but hopefully you can make an assessment based on what you are looking for.

I was in the same boat as you -- hated the stock wheel -- and ended up going TechArt (see attachment) even though the price is pretty crazy. Wish I could give you an OEM alternative, but unfortunately there isn't one that's thick enough IMO.

Why not get DCTMS to modify your OEM wheel? Member "Marc" has one, and it looks great:

I've spoken with Ivan at DCTMS about doing my wheel, too, and I should be sending it to him next week.

+1

I've read some thread regarding their work and everybody seems very happy with the service.

Steer clear of AGLA (Alan Gunn). They seem to screw up everything they touch.

I started a correspondence with Ivan at DCT last week and then he kind of disappeared...got me nervous about his reliability. DCT seems like the best priced alternative to OEM or Techart, but with only one member using him, I'm hesitant to put my wheel in DCT's hands.

Why do you say only one member? I just did a search and it produced numerous posts from happy customers.

My comment was based solely on member "Marc"'s post where he seemed to be introducing the company to the board, as well as the community's collective response to the post.

I confess I didn't search for other posts before posting my reply.

I reached out to the seller of that wheel and couldn't get comfort that the wheel was actually thicker...what makes it a more difficult choice (other than the fact that it might not be any thicker) is that the round air bag I have (i) may not fit, and (ii) is black, not gray like the GT3 wheel. It's a great price for the wheel though.

Anthony, that sterring wheel is beautifull! Excellent color and material choice. Looks perfect in that interior.

Try Vorsteiner Steering Wheel, it looks a lot like the TechArt for less money. Vividracing sells them for $1,800 (I know it's still expensive) + Core exchange.

Here's the link: http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/v...e-p-74250.html

I posted in the thread about that wheel. You can't use your 997.1 airbag, the newer one is slightly smaller. You will also require a control unit to fit behind the wheel if you're fitting it to a .1, which is around $200.

Suncoast sell the wheel WITH the airbag for $1395, $1595 with the control unit. I'm looking at buying one myself for my 997.1 C2S so I found out all this the other day

Thanks bavorak. Appreciate the compliment!

Seegoblue: Hmm... that's unfortunate about DCTMS not getting back to you because their work looks great. I might have to have them do the wheel in my Lotus because I like the look, but not sure how much thicker they will make the wheel over stock thickness. Maybe the Vorsteiner that sin911 suggested could be a viable option if you think it's thick enough.

Man, your wheel is incredible! I just can't come to grips with $2k for a wheel AND give them my wheel! The rewraps are pretty good - though even DCT wants $850 PLUS a core - at least $1300 for the wheel.
