What changes are done to an S to give it the extra 25-30hp?

And finally, is it worth it to get the AWD or does even a base porsche handle better in RWD than most cars

I have never driven a Porsche, but hopefully that will change soon
Just a bit of advice on your evaluation...I too initially set out with a certain set of decision criteria. Like you, speed, budget, reliability were all considerations - with speed being number 1. However, I found that my decision criteria seemed to morph after driving a few different Porsches. Specifically, I drove a few cars with experienced Porsche owners (highly recommended), and I found myself not quite as interested in raw speed (0 to 60 that is). By riding with people that truly understand the car, the heritage, and the overall engineering approach/strategy, you will gain a better understanding and therefore make a more informed purchase.

There are local clubs everywhere and there is plenty of events that allow non-member cars to participate. I did one event with Z06 club at Devens, it was fun, nice people. Results wise, as usual, it is mostly about the driver, not about a car.

Im still wanting a 911 over a Cayman, but I will be checking out a Cayman today.

IF I were to get an 996 what years had issues?

I noticed someone said to stay away from an 03 because of some leak?
Go out, study the market, test drive several ones and pick one you like.
There are cars out there. Just be wise and look carefully.

Well I really wouldnt want to lose to that vette if I decided to run him. That would just boost their ego too much.

About what year and model would you guys pick up for $40k and then $45k

Im hoping maybe a 2005 CS for $40k?
I think you might be better off with a different car than a 911 - if your goal is to have maximum speed on the quarter mile, you are looking for a car to to show off a Corvette and you are on a budget of $40k, get a used Vet and soup it up or any Mustang GT.

The 996 interior is a bit dated.
The 997.1 is much nicer and the 997.2 is even nicer.
I don't know much about 996s, but I recall reading in Consumer Reports that you should stay away from 2003s.
If you were to get a 997 I would stay away for 2005s (first year the 997 was introduced).
My porsche mechanic told me that 2005s had more problems in general.
I've seen several 2005s and the interior seems to get worn out much easier than 2006s and up.
Good luck.

You can't be serious. You need to drive a few Porsches before you buy one. If you want to drag race a Vette you'd better get a Viper or a Vette with a bigger motor because you'll be very disappointed very often in a NA Porsche. Turbo would give you a fightin chance if you don't out of road first.
