Had to replace tire...already!
Had to replace tire...already!
Just a little rant here, ok, really whining. Had to replace left front tire yesterday due to a nail that was in tire in a location that could not be 'patched'.
Only 800 miles into the new ride and already had to replace. Whaaaaaaa!
Well, as you've all said, tires are the high cost maintenance item on the P-cars.....just that I was hoping to make it to 10k miles before I had to. The silver lining is with such low miles I didn't need to replace both front tires.
C'est la vie!

Look at it this way, at least the other side is barely worn, too. Overall they should need to be replaced at the same time now.

I had the same - rear tire on a new C4S Cabrio. 300 miles and a screw was embedded in it. I actually bought the wheel / tire insurance the dealer offered, so just took it in and was on my way an hour later.

Sucks to catch a nail or screw on the side of the tire where it can't be fixed, but nothing to do with the car ...

+1 on the Road Hazard insurance from the dealer. I have had it on my last three cars (E350,S4,650i) and it more than paid for itself. With my C2S, the dealer charged me $700 for three years...and I was happy to pay it.
I have replaced 2 tires for nail damage (a front and a rear) within 10,000 miles. My dealer tells me they have a car in every day with the same issue. Even worse, if the other tire on the same end of the car has more than 30% wear on it, you will need to buy 2 tires even though the other one isn't damaged. Because of their high speed rating Porsche dealers will not patch these tires. I have Pirelli P Zeros on my C4S.
In the 80's I had a RX-7 Turbo II with V-rated tires and I had tons of issues with catching nails, screws, etc. My next car was a Miata and I stuck with all-season tires and never had an issue. It's a trade-off really. The softer the tire and the more "shaved" the tread is the more stuff it will catch.
I don't think I would opt for all-season tires on my 911 because I wouldn't want to give up any grip on a car that has so much of its weight behind the rear axle. I think the ultra sticky Michelin PS's that come on these cars today are at least part of the reason they can go around corners without the so-called "pendulum effect" and winding up in the ditch like the earlier cars did.

Welcome to the world of soft tires. The good news is that other than tires, maintenance costs for the 997 are quite reasonable. Well, let me qualify that....there is so little maintenance required that total costs are quite low. Besides, the car is worth it!!!
