i was gonna say an old jeep cherokee 4.0 but it seems some others have beat me too it. Late model rabbit with a set of snows woudl get you around just fine... or a B5 audi a4. They can both be had for relatively cheap.

I have heard that story plenty of times with the Jeeps and I've had my bad luck with one before as well. Had a 02 Grand that had lots of electrical problems at 80k miles. So I sold it and got an 04 model, supposedly those issues had been fixed and so far I havent had any trouble with it. I also have a 94 Grand Cherokee for towing the seadoos and hauling the dogs around in. Great vehicle with over 220k miles on original engine and tranny. Not worth anything so Ill use it until it blows. Guess Jeeps are hit or miss

Winner winner.....this is your ticket.

I have a '00 Toyota 4Runner that I've been cruising around in here the past month and a half (33" of snow on Sat and another 12-20" kicking in right now) and it is perfect for my Vizsla. Jumps in the back; have the gate seperator; no fuss no muss. If it wasn't the 4Runner I had an '05 Grand Cherokee picked out as well for about $9K.

A new bodystyle '05 and later would be great. Pick one of those things up for the upper teens I suspect.

dnewc2s is infamous around these parts
Just bought a 2010 GTI as a daily driver. It's really fun and the quality of the interior is surprisingly good. It also has 4 doors and plenty of space for dogs if you fold down seats. Not sure about the snow, but I think this is the most fun/quality that can be had for the mid to high $20s.

Ditto. Got one to haul the dog. The 911 works okay but when he's dirty from chasing the ball all morning he's not getting my the 9.

VW makes a nice product.
