Anyone using a full size rim/tire as a spare

Instead of spending $800 for a crappy donut tire spare I was thinking of just buying the same size rim/tire as the front on my 997 and storing it in the back seat using the seat belt and one of those tire tote bags. Does anyone know if the front size tire/rim could be used on the rear as a spare in the event I had a flat ?

Do you ever drive so far away so it would be an issue to tow car back for free?

The half-way point between dealers for me sometimes is over a hundred miles. Seems like that would be a drag no matter how you cut it. Even in town, when I have had a flat with my M5, it kinda sucked.

Carrying a full sized tire though would be over the top a bit though.

I have yet to get a flat on my car, so toting around a spare wheel and tire in the back seat seems like such a PIA. Why would you need to tow the car to the dealer to get the tire fixed, take it to any garage, it is pretty easy to fix even with the cheap plug.

Exactly - you have yet to have a flat. When you do, then you'll know.

But consider this: 100+ mile from a Porsche dealer probably means 100+ miles from a tire - repair is possible in limited cases in my experience (maybe you get lucky and "bubba" can patch it ). A flat tire and no spare is a PITA regardless. A can of goop and a compressor is best for adding insult to injury. Been there, done that. Not fun.
