Carrera 4s disconnecting drive shaft for AWD??
its a question for answer, not dumb comments
I have driven 997tt, 996tt, and other 997's. The question i ask might seem dumb but i ask so people can help me answer the question to my issue. I also have spent time in gallardos, ferraris, astons, vetts etc. I buy for value and if i wanted to, i could take my money out of my logical investments and buy more than 1 911 and a couple m3"s. For the people with dumb comments i have also lapped people with 911's on the race track with my m3. The question is simple, dont need the dumb comments, i dont know enough about this and just wanna get feedback from people who know there cars. SIMPLE for those that have the ability to help it is greatly appreciated. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THE AWD 4S 997TT ETC. THAN THERE ARE TRACK GUYS WHO LOVE 2WD GT3 AND C2S SO WHATS WRONG IF I WANT AN OPTION FOR BOTH. O buy the way there are some that can buy a porsche and some that can't thats a good one any old lady that can buy a new camry loaded can buy a used 997 so back to my question at hand

I also have friends who are BMW drivers, love their cars and drive them well. They do not like 911s. I offered that as useful experience.
You may not like my answers, but I posted to comment on and reply to what you asked. I wish you well in your decision.

Lemme help you out.
Yes you can disconnect the drive shaft. You can also drive with your feet, it don't make it a good f'n idea.
AWD has it's advantages but if you like the m3 I might suggest you stick with a rwd car.
Happy shopping/research.

Not at all. I am just trying to save him time. He loves BMWs. BMWs are great cars but 911s are very different cars. Often, people are interested in them but given their experience with other cars they are disappointed. That's all.
I note that you and a few others on this thread are very new to the forum. What do you know about 911s?

Now to say im new to this forum so what do i know about 911's is an absurd thing to say!! how do you know i havent been driving 911's for the last 10 years? how do you know im not a porsche tech? only members of this forum know 911's? come on now.
As far as the origianl question if removing the front diff doesnt cause the car to have warning lights and go into some sort of limp mode or based on how the car vectors the torque to the wheels it may cause the vehicle to malfunction because it will think the front wheels are slipping. If none of that is an issue to actually do the job is probably less that 2 hours of labor so what would be so nuts about switching it back and forth if thats what the owner wants
BMWm3r1,
My take is that even if you pull the front drive shaft...you still have a bunch of extra mass from the front differential. There are threads on how to pull the differential, but it sounds like you want to be able to move back and forth. So in effect, you have a dissadvantaged C2S. If the extra width (and name plate) is that valuable to you...I guess go for it. I would also have some concerns about what this did to PSM and such...but I don't have any info to pass on there.
Even if you keep the differential in place, I really don't see this as a quick change out (2wd to 4wd and back again), so for the most part I think you would want to chose the configuration that works best for you.
M 2 cents...get the C2s...

Thank you msizzle and muerdeme for the feedback. I know a porsche performance shop owner who told me it can be done. He said about 2 hours labor and valah. Not dissconecting any wiring just the power to the front wheels. I plan on turboing the car so it might have 500hp or so so the awd might come in handy and with weather conditions. One of the techs told me the 4s car's not made to drive on 2 wheels alone but i know the cars not that much different than the c2s other than the added weight, which i could be wrong, but 200 ibs heavier when im adding 150 horses might not be so bad. i guess im looking for more of an experiance of this but to me its worth it if it is what it is, and the wider rear i really like also.
We know that you say that you are the GM of a Nissan dealership but that you 'still love the 911'.

I've personally disconnected the front drive shaft twice when taking my car to a 2-wheel drive dyno and I can tell you my car did not like it. It threw PSM codes as well as affected the cab top operation. One time it starated raining and I could not get the top to close since the computer thought I was going faster than the max top operation speed.
I personally would not recommend driving it for any extended period of time with the DS removed.
