Did I overfill the oil ??
This morning I took the measure of the oil for my 3200 miles 977.2 S. The oil measurement showed the level at low line. So I read the manual, and the manual states that each "tick" is about 0.5 qt. Then I figured that I have 3 tick to fill, so I pulled 1 qt of oil in it, and i will replenish the oil but not to exceed the maximum level. After I pulled 1 qt in the engine, I took the measurement again. To my surprise, the level showed right at maximum line. I was expecting a tick lower than the max.
How do I know if I overfilled the oil? If I overfilled, will the level showed going above the max line in the indicator? Any advice is appreciated.

It's always a good idea to never fill more then half a quart at a time. I usually like to have my level right in the middle or 3/4.
If it makes you feel any better on my last service from the dealer on my 997.2 it was filled up to the max level also (to my suprise).
Your most likely fine.

Mine comes back from the dealer after a fill at the top line and with filter they put in 10 quarts. They assure me that they are not over filling it. Based on what you said the reading was when you started, down 3 tics, you should be fine and the top line means you're full not necessarily over full.

turn engine off wait 5 mins.. turn back on and check.. should go down..
wait till the "oil light" comes on. then add a qt then its' perfect at the top again... the system is finicky for sure.. just waiting 5 mins and turning back on and rechecking changes the level by 1-2 bars..

You may possibly see some white smoke on startup in an event of an overfill. It is possible to drain some in the event that you feel you may have overfilled. Pull the filter housing and pour out the oil that is in it. That should be enough for a slight overfill.

Your car should also be on level ground, any angle can affect the actual reading.

If you overfill, the top "short" bar above the max line will blink. Same goes if you are below the min line, the bottom short bar will blink. It's in the manual, I think.

I've never heard this before. I would so prefer a dipstick. Most bemoan this finicky and inexact way of performing a basic engine check. You really cannot measure better than within .4 of a qt. At the very least, Porsche could include a gauge to verify that the car is "on the level." Oh well, progress
