Pulled over for window tint
Pulled over for window tint
I was pulled over at 8:30 am on a Sunday morning driving the speed limit on a 4-lane highway for WINDOW TINT! It's a fix-a-ticket, but pain in the ***. There was a lot of traffic and he singles me out to stop. I have to remove the tint and then go have some cop sign it off. What makes me mad is that I bought this car as a CPO from my favorite dealership Porsche of Fremont with the tint on! I may just remove it all now as I don't like one window to be clear and then the little windows on the sides to be dark. The law in CA is that the windows on the doors and windshield have to allow 70% of light through and the rest of the car can be any percentage. Any thoughts on how it looks with two toned windows? Or window tint in general?
Sorry to hear that. In CA it can be a hassle to have tint on the driver and passenger windows. For this reason I do not have tint on any of my windows. In the past, all of my cars had tint. The hassle though is just not worth it to me anymore. IMO I would just remove it all even though it can add to the look of the car when tinted. Or get some Huper Optik light tint to protect from the sun.
I did 62% all around. I think anything darker than 50% will get you in trouble. I've noticed in this economy the cops are going after everybody for everything. California is really hurting for money.
Darn.... I'm in the Bay Area as well. I also bought my car CPO with it.
I also don't have a front plate.
how would you go about removing the tint anyway? I would think it would be easier to just buy and instal new glass.

FYI, I'm looking at a car for a fellow 6speeder at an Oregon dealership. Car is a CPO and it also has the windows tinted (Oregon law doesn't allow ANY tinting of driver/passenger windows). Don't think CPO and tint have any relationship.
That sucks, the law up here is no tint forward of the driver, this means front windows and obviously front windshield.

Yah... they seem to be cracking down a bit. I grew up in South Florida and always used to have 5% all the way around. (very dark). Never had a problem until about 10 years ago when I had it on a black mustang...
...that seemed to do it. I was pulled over 3 times for tint. Finally had to change it out. 35% on the front two windows.
The Porsche is the first car I have ever owned without tinted windows. Since it isn't a daily driver, and a cab that has the top (and windows) down >90% of the time...

I have it only on the rear and back window. After I got the car I had the tint removed on the side windows because I just wasn't happy with the reduced visibility - especially with the dimming rear view mirrors. Car still looks good with only the back ones tinted. I'm thinking about going with a really light tint on the sides - maybe this summer.
New glass?! I hope you're kidding. Razor blade an edge and pull off slowly. SOAK the glass/glue side with concentrated foaming window cleaner to break down the adhesive.
No the CPO and tint aren't related, but my point was that I would think a California car dealer would know the laws and it honestly seem irresponsible for them to sell a car with the tint.
I don't think they charge much to take it off, so I will probably at least ask a professional tint person first. I will probably take it off just the side windows first to see if I like it. If I can't take the contrast, I will just remove it from all side windows and I may leave it on the rear window as I hate headlight in my rear view. When I find out the cost per window, I will update the forum.
sorry to hear that man. Illinois just passed a bill legalizing 35% on the front windows (anything works for the rest of the car).
perhaps there's hope for other states, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I lived in California.

Maybe if you can prove that you bought the car with the tint you can get out of the ticket. I know the fee for fix it ticket has gone up in recent years.
