need opinions on a c4s
newb to the forum and the Porsche world..
been lurking for a while.. trying to understand all the differences between 997.1 and .2
saw this and wanted the experts input on it.
http://www.waltersporsche.com/inventory/vehicles/2006/Porsche/911/WP0CB29946S766394/Riverside/CA/
i understand i would need a DME report before purchasing to see if the engine has been abused
not really clear what PPI is, tho.
any other options / pkgs i should be looking for ?
questions i should be asking the dealer?
fair price? good price for this vehicle?
is the extended warranty recommended?
thx in adv !

PPI is pre-purchase inspection...you should have this done...since you would be buying from dealership, I would try to get the car CPO'd to extend warranty...you would prob pay an extra 2K for CPO but prob worth it.
This car is fairly loaded...for me I would want full interior leather(look at pics with full leather interior) and PSE but thats just me...otherwise seems reasonably optioned...but price isnt that great imho...this car was selling for 6-8K cheaper 6 months ago(without CPO)...but since then prices have firmed up, imho the car is worth 62K without CPO and maybe 64K with CPO.
First, welcome!
Difficult of course to offer an opinion on a car when everyone is different w.r.t options, color, model (4S vs 2S), etc. Always a good idea to post a specific car to this and other forums in the event someone knows something about the car -- either good or bad. I wouldn't do this for every car that catches your eye though.
As you said, PPI and DME readout is a must. Post a pic of the DME readout and people can comment for you if you need help with interpretation.
My advice is to explore as many cars online as you can to get a sense for different options, colors, asking prices, etc. If you can, drive the car before you buy it to make sure it "fits" you. This is not always necessary however, but prudent if you are new to the Porsche world.
Also know that there are many brand new 2009's on dealer lots. Porsche is offering some big trunk money and so most dealers are offering $15K to $20K off MSRP. Depending on MSRP and a dealer's desire to move the car, you can find brand new '09s (coupes) for a little under $80K. Used '09's can go for low $70's. The selection isn't all that great, but you may find something that suits you.
Have fun with the hunt!

Welcome to the forum....are you stuck on getting the 4 or is the rear wheel drive car ok too?
Drive both a 4S and Carrera S (2 wheel drive) they feel different. I personally prefer the rear wheel drive only.

cpo is a good idea.. and i will remember the $2k difference when i see a cpo vs non-cpo at the dealer.
what exactly is a pse? i've read elsewhere that this is a must for enthusiasts..

i guess in a way, i did start this one in a hope of people pointing out the things i need and things i dont .
all the options available in porsche are over-whelming.
its a great advice about looking at all the different 911 available on-line to get a feel.
and i 'll be sure to check out the new car inventory, too !
on that note.. 09 911 = 06 911 S power-wise? or at least similar?
no, i am not stuck on the 4..
and i can see why people might prefer the 2wd.
in fact, the 4s i test drove felt heavier and more sluggish than the reg s.. and the 911s cab actually felt the lightest to me..
however, the 4s seemed like it had the best cornering (short test drive).. and i thought it had the nicer look in the rear.

on a used, is there a big price difference between the 2wd and the 4?
i will not be taking this to the tracks..hence the cabriolet.
it will be for weekend use mostly.

66K is a lot of money for that car . Consider this .. another forum member sold his impeccable 06 C4S cab last year for what they are asking for that car . With a CPO the car is worth upper 50's with those miles and that age.
My guess is they will let you walk .. but you can always make the offer and see.

Yep I can understand you liking the wider rear end...I do too. The 2S steering will feel lighter and more responsive than the 4S steering. My 06 was a Cab...great car and perfect fun weekend cruiser.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
thank u!

Also try going to porscheusa.com and build your own. Most options have short descriptions. Should give you a good sense as to what's available and the relative cost for each option.
PSE = Porsche Sport Exhaust.
Wikipedia is also a good resource to learn about the different 911 versions.
Oh, and remember to check the for sale sub-forum here -- buying a car from a fellow 6speeder is usually a great way to go (but all the necessary pre-purchase inspections still apply).

Yes, I agree that the car is worth about 60K. I did quite alot of research on the C4S cab when I bought mine about 4 months ago. Similarly optioned. And, although mine is an '07, factoring in model year and milage differences 60K for CPO is the most you should pay. By the way.....I love the FAT A$$ on the C4S!!
spent the wknd looking at 911s and test driving them..
decided to look for 911S cab manual - with sports chrono plus and sports exhaust.. full leather and bose would be a plus !
thx everyone !

I've been driving a car much like you are spec'ing for three years now. I bought it used and have mod'ed it quite a bit doing virtually all of the work myself. Well actually not myself. I did much of it with my 19 year old when he was home from UC. A great 'bonding' experience. And it's the finest cars I've even owned. Period.
There are lots of opinions about the leather interior so I'll leave that alone. But I'd not get too fixated on PSE. It's better than the stock exhaust but I'd replace any of the factory exhaust systems with an aftermarket setup. Nice sounds, a bit of added power, much lighter. I have a Fabspeed setup which I would highly recommend but there are a few other great brands/products at different price-points out there.
There was just a thread about the Bose. The 6Speed crowd is quite divided on this one (I don't have it and I'm glad I don't) but this is one that is hard to correct later so you should sit in a car with the base and Bose and decide.
And for those who state that a cab can't go to the track, I beg to differ (though the following is theory - I haven't been to a track in many years). Unless you are very competitive and very capable, the performance difference between the cabs and coupes will not matter a whit (a small unit of measure).
