using new iphone/ipod cable AND usb flash drive

Hey guys

My 09 TT came with the ipod only cable. It will not charge my Iphone 3GS, but offers some sort of bizarre playback through it (need to work on that later).

Anyhow, I use USB stick drives for my BMW and had a bunch made for the Lotus (Kenwood) and like that idea versus having to dock my phone in that little cubby. Here's my question: I want to occasionally charge my iphone but do not want to give up the potential of playing a USB stick (which will be used most times).

Anyone split the USB port? I want to get a simple Y (not a hub) that will allow simultaneous charging of the iphone and a flash drive to be used. In essence, just "occasionally" charging the iphone (taking the +5V line) but most often addressing the USB drive.

Thanks!

I haven't tried it, but it wouldn't be too expensive to try a small USB Hub. Here is what you can try:

dma550, what you need to do is plug in your iphone like normal, but also take the usb end of the cable and plug it into the usb port on the car.

Yes, but in doing so, I lose my 32G flash drive. I am trying to see if the updated cable is just passively sucking +5V out of the USB connector.

Thanks

What you need is the USB cable from an external hard drive for a computer.
Some have 2 cables - on is a normal USB cable, the other has a USB pass-through plug from which the cable pulls only power. That is what the new ipod cable should be, so you can still plug in a flash drive into the USB port area AND charge a newer generation iwidget. Unfortunately no one makes them. They are made for external USB HDD enclosures, but that won't work here.. as they are too big and bulky for this space.

yeah, can't seem to find these. I see plenty of ones designed to pool current from two USB and pipe it to 1 USB (like a HD), but I think in this case, I just need 1 male to plug into the USB spot, which steals the +5V line to a female socket, and another female socket into which the adapter is plugged. I may just make these and sell em!

Looking here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus

it looks like pin 1/5 are all I would need to pass on the "slave".

Or just get a cigarette lighter to charge the iPhone. Stow it when you're done and solve all your problems

Well, really, the solution for Porsche is to redesign the internal bit of the audio-interface so the 5v supply is supplied via a slightly different DIN plug to the idock connector using a 3rd cable type... thus not using up the USB port just to get 5vdc.

Exclamation

On page 42 of the PCM 3.0 manual they tell you NOT to use a USB hub.

If your iPhone 3GS doesn't charge, try to use this adapter. My 2009 Mercedes has the same cannot-charge problem with its factory iPod Integration Kit, and this adapter works like a charm. Give it a try.

Regards,

P.S. I think Porsche addresses the issue in the current Universal Audio Interface. My 2010 GT3 seems to charge my iPhone 3G okay.

eek, didn’t even think of a charging adapter. I have the new cable coming, maybe I'll just sell it off. Sure beats the cable / adapter tomfoolery I was looking at.

Maybe I'm not getting the why.

What about this?

iPhone connects to PCM via bluetooth for all phone functions. Use outlet in passenger side of console for a charger for iPhone. ProClip has a nice holder and there are others as well. http://www.proclipusa.com/

Leave the USB port for your flash drive with your music.

I do this except I have an older iPod connected in the console just for music.

Just to update this as I just purchased this adapter from Amazon (as I'm no longer plugging in an iPod Video but an iPhone 4s)... and the adapter is going back because it won't work if the iPhone has a case on it. The adapter design has the plug right up to the fat adapter, so it will only connect to the iPhone if there is no case in the way. The Porsche y-cable has a more reasonably shaped plug that will easily fit even with a case.

So if you're iPhone is bare, his may work; if you put it in a case, get the Y-cable.
