Step up to lighter-grit sand paper as you go to get a completely smooth finish with your last coat. It's pretty simple and should anything ever bang it up you can touch it up at home instead of having it re-blasted. Either way seems to work just fine in my experience.
Thanks a lot for your post. I'm going to give it a shot, I really have nothing to lose by trying to paint it myself, beside a $5 paint can and a couple hours of my time on the weekend. If the paint does happen to chip off later on down the road, I'll go ahead and "get it done right" by ceramic coating it. I'll be sure to post some pics afterward for you all to see.

Try looking for metal refinishers. Custom motor cycle & hot rod shops send out parts to be powder coated or ceramic coated. Wheel repair shops do powder coating and may know who does ceramic coating. Call and ask for help finding a place near you.

Good luck..

I powder coated mine and it looks great. I was initially concerned with the heat build up in that area. After several drives and checking the temp of the tips, I never reached a temp that was near the flow temp of the powder.
