I really looked at the E39 M5's. Lots of things to go wrong with those. Carbon build up in the heads is a common problem that is very expensive. Probably better of getting the newer model and buying a CPO car. No one's going to say you're slacking with 500 hp.
I was just recently shopping for an extra car, and I considered a 2008 M5 amongst others. Turns out they don't really have an equivalent of the Porsche CPO program for the M cars. I was looking at a 2008 with very low miles, and it only came with the balance of the factory warranty. I asked the salesperson about CPO like warranty programs, but he didn't have any straight answers. I was left with the impression that you're expected to self-insure when it comes to the M5.

e39 M5 is a great car - probably the best BMW in ages - they don't make anything like it now. I drove mine like an M5 - probably averaged 15-16 mpg and the car was solid for 4 years. I still regret selling it.

That said, a BMW out of warranty can be wicked.

I think you're making the best out of a bad situation
But then I'm hardly impartial...

Oops, sorry for my ignorance. I didn't realize the GTS had an optional manual.

Ok, please don't think I'm crazy. I see the positives and negatives on getting an E39 M5. I've changed my mind and decided to go for a certified 2006 E55 AMG for the reasons I mentioned on the Cayenne forums here.

Now the only thing holding me back is selling the CTT. I'm hoping to at least get it for the current Manheim auctions prices, if not private party values.

OP Have you thought about an e90 m3? They drive pretty well and you could get your manual fix, surely again with the e55 amg you will miss a manual box? Obviously its your choice and the amg is a great car, but I think you may have overlooked the m3. Good luck and enjoy whatever you choose.

not sure i understand why u r selling ur CTT to purchase a 03 m5 manual..

u had two cars in cali, is there a reason u cant keep the CTT AND buy another weekender?

i feel u will regret selling the CTT once ur repair bills add up on the 03 M5.. plus the m5, as fun as it is, will not give u the same satisfaction as the 911.

buy ur self a cheap miata and row away..

thats my 2 cents..

Initially I thought you missed your stick shift, so trading CTT for M5 makes some sense.

Now trading CTT for E55 is crazy. There is nothing on a E55 that I will trade a CTT for. Are you sure you have made an informed decision?
