Major Withdrawal from my 6speed 997 4S

Ok, I hope I didn't make the wrong decision in selling the wrong car. I "had" a nicely optioned 2006 Carrra white 997 4S in 6 speed. It was essentially my fun weekend car. I recently sold it since I'll be moving to Miami and won't have room for it. I decided to keep my 2006 Cayenne Turbo since it was the more practical 4 door vehicle that could also serve as my utility vehicle...ie using it as an SUV.

Now that I no longer have the 997 for the weekends, I'm getting withdrawals from rowing through the gears and driving a real sports car. So, I impulsively place my CTT on autotrader. I figure that I need a car more suitable for all around sportiness with the ability to comfortably seat 4 passengers. I'm not looking into spending much on another car until I'm done with my fellowship and move back to Southern Cali so I set my limit at $24,000 on a nice, clean 2003 E39 M5. It was the last year the "beast" had a 6 speed manual. I'm just waiting for the CTT to sell before I pull the trigger on the M5.

Do you guy's think I'm being irrational or impractical? I think the M5 will be the treatment to my withdrawals as it will serve the purposes I mentioned above...which the CTT can't satisfy.

Thanks for listening.

I feel like you hit the trifecta of please don't do its
1) selling the C4S
2) moving to MIami
3) Fellowship at Jackson

It's like picking any of the three would have me wondering why I left Los Angeles.

So now you want to sell the Cayenne ? For an M5. Blech!!! I had an E39 and only kept it two months -NEW!!!!! in 2000.
Please don't do this.

Sell/ keep/trade the Cayenne for another 997. In fact I even found an 06 worth looking at and using it as a DD in MIami . http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false

As much as we all would like to have a life where only 2 seats and 2 doors are needed, rockstar obviously is not one of them.

E39 M5 is a great machine. The 'OG' of the super saloons. Just be careful of the specimen you pick up as repair costs can be a $$$ pit. A bit dated in the looks department, but I still turn my head when I see one on the road. GL with your search. And what fellowship are you doing at Jackson?

The E39 M5 has the same Hp as the current M3 and despite its size can handle very well but I found it boring inside of one month of owership. It felt like a big family car with Hp. I was 40 at the time and i felt like an old man.

The "M" cars drive well but they lack the finesse of the Porsches. Even the Cayenne Turbo is more appealing to me. That would be his cheapest option . Just keep the Cayenne .

Well, you can't make a pig into a gazelle. It still is a 4 door saloon anyway you look at it. But for what it is, it is still a remarkable machine. The fact that it wasn't for you is understandable considering you have an EVOMS tuned TT. But strictly on a performance level, I'd def take an E39 M5 over a CTT.

There is no substitute. Get another 4S. Mine is my weekend car and I can't imagine the summer without it. An M5, though nice, is still a sedan.

If you want something between an SUV and a sports car, I believe the M5 will do just fine. IMO, the e39 M5s look tons better than the current one. It has the classic look but it's also not too dated. If you like it and it makes sense, I would go for it despite what other's say...

Another thing that is rarley mentioned about the M cars (the E39 in particular) is it's apauling mileage. Driven normaly, you can expect 10mpg. Also note that maintenance is a little silly on them. For example, they use 10W60 castrol TWS oil that isn't easy to track down.

I know that arguing the economics of a highline car is somewhat silly but you mentioned wanting to maintain a budget.

Keep the CTT. Buy another 911 when you can. Wanna have some real fun? Get a 964. They're super cheap right now and some would argue that it's a more unique car as a weekend warrior.

Thanks everyone for all your input. Yes, the smartest thing to do is to keep the CTT and wait unti I'm ready to get back into a 911. Wow, that's at least 3 to 4 years from now since my fellowship and move back to Southern California won't happen until then. I hope I can last without driving a relatively fun 6 speed for that long.

I know some of you guys have mentioned that getting into the 997 now would be the better option. I actually thought about that before I sold my C4S and considered ditching the CTT, but if I only had one car I really need the 4 doors with some room for cargo, groceries, supplies, etc.

So it seems like the E39 is not a really bad choice if I needed that 6 speed fix with the ability to sit 4 passengers. Economically I sell the CTT, buy the M5...and still have some extra change in my pocket. I guess I'm not really that crazy after all.

Now if only there was a decent market for the CTT. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks again fellow 6speeders

Not wanting to cause more problems, but have you tested a 6 speed Cayenne GTS?

Yes, and the GTS is a great ride but it still won't satisfy my need to row through those gears since its got an autobox.

As much as I loved driving the PDK on the track at Porsche events, I definitely know for sure that my next P-car will have to have a 6 speed manual. It may be slower than the PDK, but at least it keeps things fun (for me at least).

Don't know if you've checked it out, but you'll be taking a bath on that CTT. The prices on those have really been creamed.
I really looked at the E39 M5's. Lots of things to go wrong with those. Carbon build up in the heads is a common problem that is very expensive. Probably better of getting the newer model and buying a CPO car. No one's going to say you're slacking with 500 hp.
