Coolant Capacity of 997 Carrera S
Coolant Capacity of 997 Carrera S
Anyone know what's the coolant capacity of the 997 Carrera S? My car has close to 60,000 km and it's almost 4.5 yrs old. I think it's time for a coolant change. I just need to know how much Porsche coolant I will need for the job. Thanks in advance.
To properly (re)-fill the Porsche's cooling system, you really need one of these gizmos:
http://uview.com/ProductDetail.php?PartNumber=550000
It uses air from a compressor to create a vacuum in your cooling system. Once a sufficient amount of air is removed, the device then uses that vacuum to suck a complete system load of coolant back in to all of the pipes in the car.
The value of this is that, particularly for mid- and rear-engine cars, there are so many twists and turns of the coolant tubes running from stem to stern that bubbles form during the refill process, inhibiting cooling efficiency. These air pockets remain no matter how many 'drive-and-fill' sessions you do to top off the system.
This was recommended to me by a very expert and respected high-end auto tech who services a lot of Ford GT's, Lambos and Porsche's.
When I installed the center radiator in my car, I did a bit of an experiment doing first the 'drive-and-fill' (really it's drive and top off) technique followed by using this device. The additional amount that the car 'absorbed' was substantial. It is also cool and a bit alarming to see all of the rubber hoses in the car flatten out as the air is sucked out of the system.
The cost of the tool is not much different than a cooling system flush and fill at a private mechanic. Of course, you need a compressor to use it, but who doesn't have one of those??
Of course I didn't answer your question, but the spec is in the owners manual (I believe). I do recommend that you use Porsche-brand concentrated coolant system fluid, a proper mix of RedLine WaterWetter and distilled water for the right fluid blend.

Verde,
Thanks very much for the detailed response. I actually saw the device you mentioned that was used to do a fill on a 996 Turbo. I was alarmed and puzzled by the amount that was drained (seems a lot more than 10 litre) than the amount that was put back in (around 10 litre). Have you done a flush on your 997S cab? If so, can you just drain from the drain plug or do you have to disconnect some of the hoses as well to drain all the old coolant out? And if you just drain from the drain plug, did you get 32 litre out according to the specs in the owner's manual?

I think I need one of these. I know that my SC intercooler's coolant lines and tank can't be completely full the way I filled them. Now, the fill receptical is always full, and the coolant circulates very well, but I do hear some sloshing in the front tank, which means there's air in there.
