Need a history lesson on changes/problems 997.1 and 997.2
Anyone know if there is a simple summary of the changes made between the 997.1 and 997.2 as well as issues of concern with each year (i.e. RMS, etc.)?
The brief version -
The 997 (launched in aug 2004 as an 05 model) --
The 05 cars faced reduced RMS incidence compared to the 996 . IMS surfaced in a few cars . There was one minor recall .
06 -08 got progressively better but changes were somewhat minimal . Some of those changes were PCM upgrades but the car .
09 - present -the 997.2 came into the play . Most of the attention points at the sophistication of the PDK and the PCM upgrades (ipod. etc) . Not enough praise was given to how well the Dfi really improved the car --but it truly is impressive . Also the suspension now offers an option to get the axle lock and the AWD cars all get it standard.
The car has been reliable in most cases . The typical complaints are soot buildup , oil consumption , and a few have posted a PDK tweak here and there but for the most of these cars have been pretty solid.

Not sure if the same was true on the 997 but the 987 went through a revision in the engine casing for a larger rear main intermediate shaft bearing sometime around 2007. As a result the engine code went from M96 to M97. The 997 has a beefed up crankshaft compared to the 987 though I've heard of a few cases of IMS failures on both early 3.6 and 3.8 997 engines. The gear selector cable was also a weak point on early cars , but can be replaced with a revised design. Early cars equipped with bose and PCM units (pcm 2.1) may experience difficulty in being upgraded in navigation as a result of the early Bose amps. As a result its better to seek advice before updating maps. From about mid 2006 the pcm 2.1 had MP3 capability , but only for the single Cd slot in the PCM, the Cd changer is and always has been Cd only.
Like most manufacturers the suspesnion and wearing parts have been subject to minor revisions in both supplier and design over the life of the model.
