Well, if we are really "coloring outside the lines" with a wish list for the 911 then let's make a superior handling sports car by making it mid-engine!! Let's eliminate the back seat, move the flat-6 (or better yet a flat-8!) ahead of the rear axle, and create a rear trunk, all the while keeping the classic, beautiful 911 shape. We could enjoy classic Cayman mid-engine handling advantages (hopefully with less electronic aids that are needed with the current 911 rear weight bias) and enjoy the 911 beauty and performance. I realize Porsche would lose a few sales for people who might really use the rear seats for small kids, etc, but this would be minimal. I would think the engineering/design is possible, and it would involve some big investment and big vision my management, but it would really be worth it. Besides, sports cars should be 2-seat!! Thoughts?

For me- I wouldn't want aluminum body panels. Too soft/unforgiving/easy to dimple, damage & ding compared to steel; and quite pricey to repair. I'll take the extra weight of steel.

Another thing, keep the rear-engine. If I wanted mid-engine car, I'd get a CaymanS (or... the 918??). I want the 911's backseat area (no matter how small it is) and the extra front legroom the 911 affords drivers. You'll lose that, with the mid-engine.

1. Dump the BOSE
2. DUMP the BOSE
3. DUMP THE BOSE and get a real quality audio system befitting a car of this pedigree. Yeah I know it's a sports car...
4. The glass rear-window hatch lift option would be nice, ala the Targa.
5. Side skirts, OEM, standard.
6. Front lip, std.
7. Did I say DUMP the.... oh nevermind.

Aluminum is actually much stiffer per ounce (less so by volume). The big problem with Al is it's more prone to cracks and other major failures instead of denting like steel. Steel can also be deformed multiple times (eg. dents can be hammered out) and it doesn't suffer too badly, whereas fixing a dented Aluminum panel can risk wrecking it.

Anyway, I vote for carbon fiber body panels! Anything to get the weight under 3000 pounds but keep the practicality as a daily driver (eg. I like my soundproofing (what little there is) thank you very much) would be awesome.

1. Dump the BOSE
Oh yeah, very good one! And also use standard car audio wiring so I can use aftermarket amps and speakers.

No. 1 tells me you are not a 911 fan. But, unfortunately you will get that on the 991.

No 2 is just as bad. Do you understand that a glass cover is heavier than steel?

It never ceases to amaze me what the sports car owner cross section has become.

And to others' suggestions - a 911 is no platform for heavy stereo systems - dump them all. And no mid-engine either - whoever suggests that does not get what an 11 is all about.

And now I take cover.

Flat 8 engine would be a good start, and aluminum construction with a slightly more forward weight bias!

I think good high efficiency transducers with lightweight neo motor + class D amp could nicely do the job, without even the need of heavy subwoofer...

Sound-wise, a 100k+ car should:

a) have an exotic sounding motor

b) have a decent stereo system

The actual 997 has none of it.

A 911 - and the 997 is an excellent example of it - is a sports car not a boulevard posing set of wheels.

a) and b) has nothing to do with "posing".
