Do you consider the 911 an "Exotic" or "Supercar" ?
For me, it's hard to define supercar and exotic. Exotic is easier, as supercar less so. But when I don't think too much about the strict definitions, and somewhat lump them together, it's a bit easier. I was one of those kids who lusted after the VectorW2, Ferrari's, Countach, Porsche Turbos, etc while in early adolescence.
I think of old cars like the Miura as the ultimate exotic and the F40 as the ultimate supercar, for older cars. These days, I think of the Muchielago as more exotic, and the CGT, Zonda, Enzo, Veryon, etc as a mix of supercar and exotic.
I don't think the 911 fits into either category. For me, the GT3RS might fit into supercar, but the GT2, and GT2RS would for sure, but I wouldn't consider them to be exotic.
But - I know for sure that my opinion varies from most - somehow or other, as these adjectives seem to be less defined than they were in the past. That is, I don't think anyone could say for sure. Maybe a noted auto journalist or expert could write a column on the current state of supercar and exotic, and we can all bash it!

I dont think there is a right or wrong answer to this
for some they grew up dreaming of porsches and others grew up dreaming of lambos. I personally always looked at pictures of lambos and dreamed that I would buy one of those if I won the lotto and the porsche always seemed my obtainable because there were cars like the 944 and 914 that mere mortals could afford, where as lamborghini or Ferrari did not have these models. Now that I'm grown up and can afford some of these cars I decided I wanted both. I drive the Porsche for practical reasons and the lambo when I want to get crazy.
Good point. Both Italian marques produce almost unattainable cars, new or used, to most people. Performance is backed up by materials and craftsmanship not seen in most production cars. Maintenance becomes a major hassle though; probably one of the reasons why most (I assume) cannot drive these cars on a daily basis.
Both American cars you mentioned are much more affordable and offer almost the same kind of performance numbers (especially when modified), which in itself can be considered exotic. They are also much less expensive to maintain. That said, American interiors and ride are said to be lacking to their European counterparts.
I would say w/ these two arguments, Porsche comes inbetween. Their mid-engined supercars are in an entirely different league though.

The primary differences are that the italian marques don't make entry-level cars, and they also make very limited production runs. Every model is somewhat rare, as well as relatively expensive (or overpriced, depending on how you look at it), which gives the mirage that they are actually producing 'better' automobiles, which in reality, they are not.

Yes its a supercar. Especially this new Home Run the C2S PDK. I have driven many different cars, Vipers, Corvettes, F Cars, etc etc. In performance this 911 is as good as it gets. For those of us in the know, yes the 911 is a super car. For pedestrian people with no car knowledge it may be or not. I would consider the TT, and GT cars no brainer supercars. The Carrera, Carrera 2, Carrera4, Carrera4S are more subtle super cars.
Definately not exotic. Supercar "performance" but not really a supercar either.
To me, they are the best, well rounded sports cars. The complete brand, not just specific cars.

I would guess some would view the 911 lineup overall as a super car, and the CGT would fall into the exotic category. However, I think the performance and capabilities of the 911 TT, GT2, GT3 merit the exotic title.

+997 for "super sports car". I've had many variances of P-cars to include a factory DP slantnose turbo to a Ruf modified 964 Speedster which I would place in the "super car" and "exotic" categories. However, my current '06 997S (which is for the most part stock) has the build quality and performance that rivals any of the "exotic" P-cars I've had in the past.
For me, what makes this a "super sports car" is that it provides the best of both worlds... near 993 turbo power but still with the old school feel of my 70's 911E's from the past given the "throwability" and its lack of lag. Just an all around joy! I'm not a Ferrari or Lambo guy (only because I could never afford one), and would love to have a Lambo one day I guess just to say I had one, but I doubt there is a comparison as I just mentioned that puts the lambo into that 70's sports car bucket comparison.
You guys that have had the late 60's/early 70's 911's can relate, I'm guessing.

I strongly believe the 911 series is the world's best production sports cars. In all performance, exterior design, durability, and interior quality. It is the best bang for the buck! Some people may disagree because of the high price but Porsche delivers a lot! I do not mean to offend any American Muscle owners but their performances are gained from 5.0 or 6.0L engines, and their interior quality is ****...
911 is a Sports Car with Super Car performance, and daily drivable.
I think the GT series (CGT, GT3, GT2) are exotics and supercars.
