what size track tires for my 997S?

I have a stock 2005 997S and I'm planning to buy a set of wheels and tires for DEs.

My current tires are Michelin PS2.
Front 235/35ZR19
Rear 295/30/ZR19

I was thinking of 18" factory lobster forks or something simple like that with Toyo R888.

Anybody know what size tires I should go with to keep the speedo and tire diameter correct? Thanks.

i heard that R888's don't last long on a track..

i'm looking for a dedicated set of track wheels myself. I'm thinking 18x9 and 18x12 with 245-40-18 + 325-35-18

You can do better than an OEM wheel for track use. I use a set of 18 inch Volk racing wheels (from Tire Rack). Very light weight and they seem to be holding up just fine.

For tires, I just took a set of R888s off and went back to Yoko A048Rs, which I far prefer. Toyo's cupped out too fast, and are unbelievably noisy.

You need:

9x18 and 12x18 with 245-40-18 an 305-35-18 for proper outside diameter.

I have used Toyo R888 before many times and they will last around 8-10 DE days of hard use. I am currently on Toyo RA1's and they do not heat cycle out as fast. On the track the R888 do not give you much audible feed back at all at the limit. RA1's will squeel and give lots of audible feedback. I drive them only to and from the track so I could care less about how loud any of them are on the street.

The Toyo's are noisier then the Yokohama 048's, wow they must be really loud!

+1 on the Volk TE37's very light weight and tough. I run 245/35/18 and 315/30/18's

Ask 'obsessed' about the new OZ racing Allegerita's (sp?). 18" and very light, not too much $$. Check Tire Rack.
On the track, nothing beats the Hoosier R6, IMHO. If you want to go cheaper, get the Kumho. If you want to drive to the track, run laps, and then back home on the same tires, got the RA1 or A032. All that is a bit dated, but I think still valid.

btw - Hoosiers run a bit wide and the 285/30/18 might suffice for the back. I think you have a couple of choices up front and I might try a 245.

Yep the OZ's seem to be some of the better cast wheels and good bang for the buck. The only cast wheels I'd use are stock Porsche wheels but the OZ's in my groups I run with seem to be holding up.

DO NOT SKIM ON CHEAP CAST WHEELS FOR THE TRACK....IT CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS.

Try to go with a quality forged wheel from CCW, Volk, BBS, Forgeline, Champion ect.

285/30/18 would be way too short for a 997. Needs to be at 285/35/18, I run a R6 in 315/30/18 and there are no issues with rubbing.

good info. I'll be going down this path in a few years. I'm still tracking my purpose-built 944 for now.

The annoying thing about the OZ wheels is they are 18x8.5 and 18x12 which is a weird combo. You really want 18x9 + 18x12 or 18x8.5 with 18x11 or 18x11.5

The trouble with the 997 is that it requires different front to rear ratio tire diameter. Up to the 996 they used the same diameter front and rear and many different manufactures made appropriate combos.

305 / 245 works but you're stuck with Hoosier, toyo, and maybe one or two others. I'm in the same boat.

New GT3RS and GT2RS use 245-35-19 and 325-30-19 which are respectively 25.75" and 26.68" O.D. wheels
