The overall message I see is that the very best have slightly less than one problem per 100 cars and the worst ( with the exception of Land Rover , always) have slightly more than one problem per 100 cars.......big deal! This tells me there is little difference in the initial quality ( as defied by JD Power) from brand to brand.

Basically every brand has, more or less, one problem per 100 cars. It basically means they ALL have their manufacturing process under control. It means nothing more.

It is actually 1 problem per car (or 100 problems per 100 cars), and this is just initial quality. What it doesn't say is what the problems are, it could be a transmission replacement or it could be a squeaky window requiring a slight adjustment.

You are right.... one problem per car.... I was going through too quickly. And, as you say, it doesn't really indicate seriousness of the problem so I still question the value of the survey.

you could certainly look at it that way. another way is that over the course of hundreds of thousands of cars, porsche has 20% fewer issues than the industry average.

it's also statistically significant that VW and Audi lag significantly, which is interesting.

VW now owned Porsche, perhaps Porsche will help improve VW's products.

Or VW will end up diluting Porsche's quality be melding VW design and technology into Porsche's products in an attempt to make Porsche more "mainstream" and affordable to a larger segment of drivers. VW is already pushing Porsche to introduce more models, and increase production, more quickly than Porsche is used to doing. Porsche quality could be the first casualty of this new marketing model.

Wow, Ford has made a huge comeback...up to number 5. The Ford Mustang was the leader in the sporty coupe segment up to $40k.
