exhaust option for a DD?
Hello all,
I am going to upgrade my stock exhaust on my C2 997.2. I am inclined to go with the PSE and use the ecoupon from PCA for the purchase.
Is there a less expensive option that is feasible (in terms of volume) for a daily driver? Is there anything option that effects only the sound in the top of the rev range so that cruising/parking speeds are somewhat unaffected?
The secondary x pipe I'm told is loud. The dual mode Fabspeed isn't much less than the PSE so it's not an attractive option.
Thanks for any suggestions.

The "Gundo Hack" (do a search) is a popular and relatively cheap modification done to the stock secondary mufflers. A connection pipe is welded between the inlet and outlet pipes on the side mufflers which gives the exhaust a deeper tone without creating an excessive amount of drone. Many here have done this mod with satisfying results. As I understand it, the earlier (996) models without the center (primary) muffler gets a slightly better sound than the later models with the additional stock center muffler. There is no increase in TQ or HP, just a better sound.
You may want to try the bypass pipes (not X-pipes) from Sharkwerks or AWE. I have the AWE unit and I love it. It is barely noticeable at the lower revs and very nice in the upper range... Best of all they are both fairly cheap at around $695
I would spend the extra and get the FVD (Quiet version ) . You'll need their software to eliminate the CEL if you get the complete system. The power gain is nice and it gives enough growl to let you know it's there without waking up the neighbors . Inside the car it's nice .. no drone at all and even quiet until stepped on . I have one or two small sound clips but I don't post on youtube but can e mail them to you if you want to hear what my car sounds like. Just shoot me a PM if interested .

exhaust..............
I recently had TUBI system installed and love it. Nice, powerful rumble on startup, very livable in normal driving, the sound kicks in above 3,500 RPMs.niiiiice!!!!

I would do the PSE. Being able to toggle between the 2 exhausts is great, especially with a daily driver. The ability to switch to quiet mode when driving in and out of your neighbourhood at night or make a cell phone call. Yet at the push of a button you get a great sounding exhaust. Perfect senario for a daily driver.
And if you decide to add it, put the bypass button in the ashtray area. It's far better to toggle it manually anyway than having it tied into "sport mode"
Can you tell this will be my next mod?

I did the gundo hack in conjunction with the AWE crossover pipes...
The sound is awesome, trust me for what i paid for it compared to the PSE you get a much better sound.
only downside is you cant turn it off, but how many sports cars do you know of that the exhaust can be turned off?

I did the gundo hack, cost next to nothing and the sound is amazing. IMO a perfect sound, not too loud but loud enough to know your coming. With the windows closed there is barely a difference but from the outside it has a really nice raw sound.
Although I was not looking for HP gains, just a throatier sound....

I just put the Sharkwerks bypas pipes on my 7S.2. They're PERFECT for a DD.
Firstly inside the car. At part throttle it's actually quieter - the bypass pipes remove a small-but-noticeable drone from the stock exhaust that's annoying. This is also true when cruising. At higher rpms/more throttle, there's a very-welcome, muted growl that wasn't there with the stock system
Outside the car. On startup it barks like the PSE. At part-throttle there's a muted growl that isn't audible from inside. At WOT it sounds more like a Porsche should, but is still really refined.
If you want to hear your car but keep everything very civilised then the Sharkwerks bypass is an excellent mod. Even better, you have a ready-made 'upgrade' route. If you install the Sharkwerks pipes, then decide you do want a more aggressive sports exhaust sound, you can simply add Tubi (or Cargraphic or whatever) side cans as a 'Stage-2' mod. All these cans are designed to work with primary bypass pipes so you can't go wrong!

I am doing similar research right now, but for a 997.1.
From what I read, the PSE is really heavy! Nice to have an OEM part, and one that provides a quiet mode -- additionally it can work off the Sport Chrono, which is nice. But I think the weight combined with the cost makes this less attractive.
Akropovic has a new system that has dual mode. I have not investigated the cost, but Akropovic makes very nice exhausts for motorcycles. Top quality.
Lastly, from everything I read and hear, the Tubi is fantastic. Not dual mode, but very high quality and manageable sound.
Hopefully, I'll be purchasing one of those soon. (that is a hint to another 6speeder ;-) )
